On Lifetime’s UnReal, a scripted drama about the behind-the-scenes making of a reality dating show, the recurring storyline of contestant Beth Ann (Lindsay Musil) being used as the chosen racist, white supremacist continues.
In the episode “Guerilla,” she doesn’t want to be controversial - until producer Madison (Genevieve Buechner) appeals to her vanity by telling her she’s getting tons of followers on Twitter for “speaking her mind” and calls her “Donald Trump with boobs.” As Beth Ann agrees to go forth, she says, “Let’s make America great again.” Yeah.
Beth Ann: Do we have to do this here? I mean, they already don’t like me. This just makes it worse.
Madison: It's gonna be super easy, and I just need you to talk about something fun, you know, like Muslims or Jameson's hair.
Beth Ann:You just want to make a big dumb joke out of me. Unh-unh! No. No, ma'am.
Madison: Look. I'm not supposed to tell you this, but your Twitter has blown up. I'm talking thousands of new followers every single day just because you speak your mind.
Beth Ann: Really?
Madison: You are like Donald Trump with boobs.
Beth Ann: Well, all right. Let's make America great again.
It was established from the beginning that the producers would exploit racial divisions for ratings. In last week’s episode, Beth Ann was bullied into wearing a Confederate flag bikini to increase racial tension with Blacktivist Ruby (Denee Benton). Ruby then wore a Black Lives Matter t-shirt for revenge. In the latest show, Ruby sported a “Black By Popular Demand” t-shirt.
I assume we will be subjected to a #BLM themed message t-shirt next week, too. I bet Ruby has a whole closet full of them.
