Colbert Warns Hillary: GOP ‘Waiting With a Meat Slicer’ If You Win

April 19th, 2016 10:13 AM

During a taped softball interview with Hillary Clinton aired on CBS’s Late Show Monday night, liberal host Stephen Colbert fretted that Republicans would run the Democratic frontrunner through a “meat slicer” if she became president.

Sitting down for the friendly chat with Clinton in New York’s Carnegie Deli, Colbert worried: “Why do you want to go back to Washington, D.C.?...The Republicans down there are waiting with like a meat slicer. If you win, they just want to – like the deli that sliced this meat, they’re ready to run you through that. Why would you want to go through that again?”

Clinton argued: “Well, because, when I actually have a job, as opposed to run for a job, I actually get things done with the Republicans. I did as First Lady, as senator, as Secretary of State.” Colbert followed up: “You think they would work with you?” Clinton declared: “Of course they would. Absolutely.” Colbert quipped: “Can I have $5 of whatever you’re on right now?”

The rest of the exchange focused on the messiest food Clinton ever ate on the campaign trail, Bill Clinton’s vegan diet, and whether she’ll let her grandchildren eat junk food.

STEPHEN COLBERT: Why do you want to go back to Washington, D.C.? Whenever I'm down there, I want to get out of there as fast as I can.

HILLARY CLINTON: Well that's where our seat of government is.

COLBERT: The Republicans down there are waiting with like a meat slicer. If you win, they just want to – like the deli that sliced this meat, they’re ready to run you through that. Why would you want to go through that again?

CLINTON: Well, because, when I actually have a job, as opposed to run for a job, I actually get things done with the Republicans. I did as First Lady, as senator, as Secretary of State.

COLBERT: You think they would work with you?

CLINTON: Of course they would. Absolutely.

[CHEERS AND APPLAUSE]

COLBERT: Can I have $5 of whatever you’re on right now?

CLINTON: You could have even 10 or 15.

COLBERT: Really?

CLINTON: This is just one of those efforts you have to get up and work on every single day. You have to be willing to find whatever common ground exists and then try to make something good happen.
