In an interview last Wednesday with Late Night host Seth Meyers, Anthony Anderson – star of the show Blackish – made some rather interesting comments regarding Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson.
When discussing the presidential race, Anderson – who has given President Obama his undying support – says he isn’t sure who he’s voting for this election, but it won’t be for “the black guy.”
He tried to joke:
A lot of people said that I and a lot of the people in the African American community only voted for Barack Obama because he was black. That theory does not hold any weight, because I don’t know any negro that’s voting for Ben Carson. I mean, his wife isn’t even voting for him, I saw her with a “Go Hillary” button on the other day.
Could the same be said for other black presidential candidates? In addition to Dr. Carson, there were Alan Keyes and Herman Cain who also ran for president. In addition to having the same color of skin, they were also all Republican.
Maybe it’s not necessarily the fact that Anderson and those who think like him will only support a black candidate – but will only support a black Democratic candidate. From Condoleezza Rice to Clarence Thomas, Mia Love to Allen West, and the many in between – black Republicans have always been treated differently by not only the media and held to a lesser standard – and oftentimes called derogatory names - by many in their own race.
Anderson’s comments on Dr. Carson comes nearly two weeks after throwing jabs at another black Republican - FNC commentator and actress Stacy Dash. During the NAACP Image Awards earlier this month, Anderson took issue with comments she made about Black History Month and BET. Anderson asked the audience:
Everybody give a round of applause for Stacey Dash…What the hell is she doing? Doesn’t she know that the Fox network is using her? She’s just an Ann Coulter dipped in butterscotch.
Baby, don’t let ‘em use you! Come back to the black people…Get back to working some of those beautiful C movies that you used to do. I promise I will see them!
In late January, Dash argued:
Either we want to have segregation or integration...and if we don’t want segregation, then we need to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the Image Awards where you’re only awarded if you’re black.
