ON MS NOW, N.J. Governor, Newark Mayor Blame ICE for Any Violence at Delaney Hall

June 2nd, 2026 12:28 PM

We noted that Rev. Al Sharpton and his panel ignored the details of the violence committed by protesters against ICE agents outside of the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark on Saturday's PoliticsNation show. On his Sunday show, the Rev was back at it following more violent protests, this time aimed at New Jersey State Police.

Sharpton did refer to the violent protesters in his first question to New Jersey Democrat Governor Mikie Sherrill, but her response failed to address it.

SHARPTON: Governor, you've called on aggressive and dangerous protesters outside the Delaney Hall facility to bring the temperature down, citing last night's violence between them and New Jersey State Police.... What's the situation right now?

SHERRILL: As you know, I've spent a lifetime defending and protecting this country. I took my first oath to the Constitution when I was 18 years old and entered the Navy. I recently took an oath to the New Jersey Constitution as I became Governor. Your next two guests, (Newark) Mayor Ras Baraka and Steffie Bartley, have spent a lifetime protecting civil rights and advocating for justice. All of us are working incredibly hard to make sure that we keep the public safe, that people can exercise their constitutional rights, and that we are able to get back to focusing on advocating for rights and dignity for people detained within Delaney Hall.

The Democrats are all about the rights of illegal immigrants, and less so about the American citizens, even children, assaulted by illegal aliens.

After informing Sherrill of the peaceful presence of his own N.Y. based organization, the National Action Network, at the protests, he asked her what she sees as the difference between those who are peaceful and "these more aggressive elements on the ground." Once again, she avoided calling them out for what they are, and instead turned to her talking points.

SHERRILL: We've had peaceful protesters on the ground outside Delaney Hall for at least a year now, advocating for better justice. We've had people who aren't receiving medicine within the facility. We have young, 18 year old women there who just want to graduate from high school. It's heartbreaking.

Then Sherrill went after ICE agents:

SHERRILL: We had reports of a hunger strike going on within the facility.... more and more people came to protest, and ICE started going into the crowd using batons against people beating people who were on the ground. The situation became more and more dangerous. And then ICE was surging personnel in. And I don't really have to tell your viewers why that would be a red line. We do not want to give ICE any excuse to get on the streets of New Jersey. We've seen how badly they do things in other states up to and including killing American citizens.

Then the Governor came as close as she would, to placing blame on the violent protesters.

SHERRILL: There was a pro-ICE protest, and there was an anti Delaney Hall protest. Those two groups were there at the same time.... Unfortunately, as darkness fell then these more violent groups rushed the police line. They were not dressed in protective gear. They started throwing rocks at them, tear gas at them. They had long poles that they had pulled out of signs and really created an incredibly dangerous situation.

Sherrill would go on to call DHS, "a real problem."  But if you thought that Sherrill's responses were for the most part, disgraceful, Newark's Democrat Mayor Ras Baraka, who had been arrested at the facility back in May of 2025, and is suing the feds claiming false arrest, put her to shame.

BARAKA: I think ultimat Sely the Delaney Hall needs to be shut down. That would end everything....It needs to be made clear that when ICE interjected itself, they created violence. They created a escalated just as they escalated the day when I was arrested.... They came to create this kind of violence. And what that does is attracts other people to the scene,  who want to see that violence and want to engage in that kind of violence....

Says the Mayor of the city recently ranked the 5th most dangerous in all of New Jersey. I wonder if Sharpton, Sherrill and Baraka can blame that on ICE, too.
