Christopher Nolan's upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey has already set social media ablaze over rumors that transgender actor Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Page, may portray Achilles.
Achilles isn’t just any character. He’s one of the most iconic warriors in all of Western literature — a symbol of masculinity, strength, and heroism dating back thousands of years. So when rumors emerge about radically reimagining a figure like that, people are naturally going to ask whether the goal is telling a great story… or forcing a cultural statement down the throats of the audience.
Brad Pitt set the gold standard with his muscular, battle-hardened Achilles in Troy. Now rumors swirl that Elliot Page formerly know as Ellen Page will play Achilles in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ a choice that screams Hollywood’s obsession with DEI checkboxes over… pic.twitter.com/KNrsOXDiLN

In addition to the speculation surrounding Page, social media users were also reacting to rumors that Lupita Nyong'o could play Helen of Troy in the film. Critics argued the casting would feel historically disconnected from the source material and pointed out Hollywood’s glaring double standard on “authenticity.”
If Elliot Page is playing Achilles, this will be the biggest bomb of Christopher Nolan’s career. It’ll be meme’d to death before it ever comes out. You can’t go from Brad Pitt as Achilles to a confused woman and expect an audience to take it seriously. https://t.co/90o9zpNrDN

Elon Musk also weighed in on the controversy on X earlier this year, responding to a user’s post about Nyong'o’s rumored role by writing that “Christopher Nolan has lost all integrity.”

After all, the industry would never cast a white actress to portray an iconic African or historically black character because executives would immediately argue it undermines representation and authenticity. But when it comes to European mythology and classical Western figures, Hollywood suddenly seems perfectly comfortable tossing historical and cultural consistency aside in favor of modern identity politics.
To be clear: none of the casting rumors have been officially confirmed. In fact, the film’s most recent trailer didn’t reveal either character — which isn’t unusual for Nolan, who is famously secretive about his productions and often withholds major characters and plot details until much closer to release.
Still, the reaction itself tells you something important — audiences are exhausted by Hollywood constantly prioritizing modern political messaging and DEI over faithful storytelling.
And frankly, Hollywood should’ve learned this lesson by now.
For years, studios have brushed aside audience criticism as “bigotry” whenever fans push back on race swaps, gender swaps, or identity-driven casting choices. But time and time again, viewers have shown they simply want authenticity, compelling storytelling, and respect for beloved source material.
That’s part of why so many recent big-budget Hollywood projects have struggled. Audiences are tired of being lectured. They want escapism, timeless characters, and stories that honor the originals instead of trying to reinvent them for political applause.
What makes this especially surprising is that Nolan has largely avoided the heavy-handed activism that has consumed much of modern Hollywood. His films have traditionally succeeded because they focus on story first — not ideology first.
Which is why many fans are hoping these rumors aren’t true.
Because if Hollywood still thinks audiences are begging for more DEI-centered reinterpretations of classic male heroes, they may be headed for another self-inflicted disaster at the box office.
