Pompous Joe and Mika’s Wedding Goes Political: It Shows ‘What We Stand For’

Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski can’t help it. The liberal MSNBC couple even made their wedding political. Over the weekend, the couple got married at the National Archives in Washington D.C., in front of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. And yes, that was intentional. Talking to Vanity Fair about the wedding, Brzezinski insisted that the location showed just how principled they are: “It makes sense now more than ever, given what we stand for as a couple, what we do for a living, and what we’re worried about as a country.”

Why, this wedding in front of the Constitution may even be a launching pad towards the White House. The Vanity Fair piece speculated about a Scarborough for president campaign:

The couple denied that the decision was intended to suggest possible presidential aspirations for Scarborough, whose name is often invoked in putative 2020 and 2024 conversations. “We didn’t think of that at all,” Brzezinski told me. “But I’m sure people will say that.”

Democratic Congressman Elijah Cummings officiated the ceremony. On Monday’s Morning Joe, co-host Willie Geist explained the absence this week of the couple:

Joe and Mika are off this week. Why, you ask? They had a very busy weekend. Joe and Mika got married. It was a small private wedding took place Saturday at the National Archives in Washington with the Bill of Rights and the Constitution as a backdrop. Congressman Elijah Cummings officiated the traditional ceremony, which he and Joe wrote together. Joe and Mika were surrounded by all their children, which made it very special for them, their kids, their family and a small group of their close friends were there with them in Washington.

Given how proud Brzezinski is of what the two MSNBC hosts “stand for,” it’s worth remembering where they stood previously. Before they were staunch Trump haters, they fawned all over the candidate. Here’s a few headlines from 2016:

Morning Blow: How Joe and Mika Became Trump’s Lapdogs

As National Review explained in 2017:

February [of 2016] was perhaps the busiest month for Scarborough and Trump. Scarborough visited Trump in his hotel during the New Hampshire primary on February 9, and the next morning Trump thanked Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski for being “supporters” and “believers.”

WILLIE GEIST: Joe and Mika are off this week. Our congratulations. Mike, I talked to them last night, they sounded great, they're happy, excited of course, and you, my friend, were at the reception.

HEILEMANN: Yes, I was.

GEIST: How was it?

HEILEMANN: It was wonderful. I mean, everybody deserves happiness and they were a very happy couple. It was a nice time, it was a wonderful reception as you pointed out the families on both sides, on Mika's side and Joe's side were both there to celebrate with them and it was a very nice evening.
