In case the lecturing, hyperbolic Avatar wasn’t left-wing enough, get ready for four sequels from director James Cameron. According to star Sigourney Weaver, the new films will continue to expose the “greed” and “callousness” of evil corporations.
If you’ve forgotten, the 2009 film featured capitalistic humans raping the planet of “Pandora” in order to take the natural resources from giant blue creatures. Talking to Entertainment Weekly on Friday about the planned sequels, she said: “These films are very much about the peril of this beautiful planet, and [Cameron] is continuing the same themes of greed and callousness of the corporations and plight of the indigenous people.”
At the time of the first movie’s release, Popular Science understated things greatly by saying the film had a “heavy environmental message.”
Weaver, like Cameron, is very interested in global warming. In fact, she thinks it’s sexist. The actress wrote in the Huffington Post in 2011:
You might think that a force as sweeping as global warming would be an equal opportunity threat: that it would endanger men and women alike. But the fact is climate change exacts a heavier toll on women.
The first of the four Avatar harangues on the environment will be released in 2020.
