Journalists on NBC and CBS appeared excited over a possible endorsement of Hillary Clinton from “progressive champion” Elizabeth Warren. Both on Thursday made sure to highlight angry attacks by Warren on Donald Trump. Today reporter Kristen Welker cheered, “As the President starts that healing process, Clinton is poised for a big endorsement.”
She enthused, “A progressive champion, Warren could help win over Sanders supporters, and she's already proven an effective attack dog against Trump.” Welker then played video of the Democratic Senator dismissing the GOP candidate as a “a small, insecure, money-grubber who doesn't care who gets hurt so long as he makes a profit off it.”
She underlined that Warren “is expected to blast Trump tonight at an event here in the nation's capital.”
Over on CBS This Morning, Nancy Cordes announced, “ Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren is seen as key to bringing these two sides together, maybe as VP or in some other high-profile role.”
Cordes quoted, “[Warren is] going to say, ‘Donald Trump is a loud, nasty, thin-skinned fraud who has never risked anything for anyone and serves nobody but himself.’”
The networks have long been fans of the very liberal Warren. On the December 12, 2014 NBC Nightly News, Kelly O’Donnell praised the Democrat as “the liberal wing’s newest star.” On March 17, 2016, CBS This Morning's Gayle King pushed Warren to endorse Clinton, pleading, “What more do you need to hear?”
A partial transcript of the June 9 Today segment is below:
