New Jersey Governor Chris Christie on Wednesday called Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson an ignoramus for criticizing his weight last year.
Appearing on MSNBC's Morning Joe, the Governor said, "As far as I’m concerned, guys like that shouldn’t have a platform to speak because they’re so ignorant” (video follows with transcript and commentary):
Towards the end of a lengthy segment, co-host Mika Brzezinski complimented the Governor for going on Oprah Winfrey’s show to discuss his weight problem.
The Governor continued, "And I appreciate what you all have been doing when ignoramuses like Eugene Robinson get on your show and start saying stuff that they say about weight, and someone should have a salad and take a walk. I mean, you know, as far as I’m concerned, guys like that shouldn’t have a platform to speak because they’re so ignorant.”
For those that have forgotten, Robinson wrote a column last September called "Chris Christie's Big Weight Problem" wherein he said, "Whether or not he lets himself be persuaded to run for president, Chris Christie needs to find some way to lose weight."
Robinson did take some heat at the time for his insensitivity, although he certainly wasn't the only media member trying to disqualify Christie as a potential presidential candidate because of weight.
