Earlier today, The Daily Mail reported that Stone had apologized for his remarks.
He said: "In trying to make a broader historical point about the range of atrocities the Germans committed against many people, I made a clumsy association about the Holocaust, for which I am sorry and I regret."
Stone told The Sunday Times "Hitler was a Frankenstein but there was also a Dr Frankenstein. German industrialists, the Americans and the British. He had a lot of support."
He also said that "Israel has f***** up United States foreign policy for years."
It was not the first time Oliver Stone has defended dictators, including Hitler and Stalin. Newsbusters' Lachlan Markay wrote back in January "Now Stone has set his sights on Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin. He plans to ‘liberalize' America's thinking regarding two of the 20th century's most murderous dictators by putting them ‘in context', whatever that means."
Lately he has befriended Venezualen dictator Hugo Chavez and defended him from criticism by the American media. A headline in Time even called their relationship a "love story."
Stone's interview was about promoting a documentary series he has made called "Secret History of America" examining the veracity of historical accounts. Although if this is Stone's version of history they'll probably only do well in the hitherto untapped Holocaust denier demographic.
The documentaries are reportedly very sympathetic to Stalin and Mao, so this surely won't be the last word on them.
