Are you an ambitious backbench Democrat congressman? Still smarting over your failed run for the presidential nomination that was so hapless, you were forced to abandon it six months before the first votes were cast?
Did you stay up last night working on a particularly nasty crack at President Trump? Excellent! Call Nicolle Wallace and she'll book you on her MSNBC show to deliver your lousy one-liner!
And so it was that Wallace had also-ran Eric Swalwell on Deadline: White House this afternoon. In what reeked of pre-planned shtick, Wallace teed up Swalwell by asking him what could be done to prevent the Trump administration from firing inspectors general. Snarked Swalwell:
"We have to have an ankle monitor on this president. This is the worst possible time for a serial offender like him to be running around unsupervised."
All that was missing was an MSNBC rimshot!
You'll notice that, following in the hirsute footsteps of some failed presidential candidates, Swalwell has gone full Algore.
Note: looks like Mayor Pete's gone Algore, too!
Here's the transcript.
MSNBC
Deadline White House
5/20/20
4:10 pm EDTNICOLLE WALLACE: Congressman, every Friday night, there’s a 50/50 chance that Donald Trump will fire another government watchdog. He’s fired four inspectors general during the coronavirus lockdowns. I think it's about every other Friday night. Is there more that you can do in any of the committees on which you serve or in the House to protect this community of government watchdogs from this administration that they’re supposed to sit inside those agencies and protect the taxpayers from?
ERIC SWALWELL: Yes, Nicolle. Again, we have to have an ankle monitor on this president. This is the worst possible time for a serial offender like him to be running around unsupervised.
