Facebook Group Claims ‘Virgin Mary Should Have Aborted’

According to Christian News Service, a Christian group is petitioning Facebook to take down a vulgar anti-Christian page which suggests the Virgin Mary should have aborted Jesus. The page’s self-description claims to “explain what really happened in biblical times, since the bible is full of lies,” refers to Jesus as “rapist’s offspring” and accuses him of having “destroyed the planet and brainwashed millions.”

The question is: will Facebook respond by upholding it’s community standards and taking down the offensively anti-Christian page?

An Australian based group of Christians led by Celene Schartner is petitioning Facebook to take down the page of the objectionable group. Currently, over 15,000 have signed the petition.

Christian News Service reported that Cary Bogue, U.S. Spokesman for “Catholics & Protestants Against Facebook Religious Discrimination,” called the page “absurd” and “beyond offensive.” In Bogue’s view, the page clearly violates Facebook policy, which states: “While we encourage you to challenge ideas, institutions, events, and practices, we do not permit individuals or groups to attack others based on their religion.”
One of the Facebook page’s administrators describes himself as “pro-premarital sex, pro-science, pro-choice, pro-gender equality.” The otherclaims to be “bisexual, awesome hair … pro-abortion for myself, pro-choice for others.”

Facebook’s “community standards” have been accused in the past of only being used against conservatives while allowing offensive liberal material to remain posted. Given its track record, it’s uncertain whether the social media giant will take the anti-Christian page down, or turn its community standard into a double standard.
