Entertainment magazine Variety sat down with comedian and daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres recently to talk about her latest standup routine for Netflix and hype her suddenly becoming “political” for Democrats. Despite the media, and DeGeneres herself, constantly denying her partisanship, she’s always been a liberal activist, both behind the scenes and on her show.
Variety’s Michael Schneider downplayed her activism from start with his headline that read, “Ellen DeGeneres Will Get Political in 2020, Just Not on Her Show: ‘We Need a Change.’ In the accompanying article, DeGeneres told Schneider that she didn’t bring politics into her work even though she had opinions:
DeGeneres told Variety that although she remains mostly apolitical on her talk show and in her standup, she’ll definitely be involved in the 2020 campaign.
"I have my opinions. I try not to bring it in. I’m not a political comedian. I’m political but I’m not the kind of person that’s going to talk about politics in standup. But I definitely think that we need a change, and we’ll figure out who that person is. I’m going to wait and see who ends up getting everybody’s vote and we’ll see who I get behind… I kind of have a candidate but I’m just going to wait."
Schneider didn’t contradict DeGeneres. Instead he affirmed she “didn’t get political” but did invite Democrats on her show (what?):
Even though she doesn’t get specifically political on her show, DeGeneres has invited several candidates on to discuss their plans, including Pete Buttigieg and Cory Booker.
Schneider didn’t mention that she has openly banned Donald Trump from appearing on her show, though she bashes him constantly, particularly when 2020 Democrats and media figures are on her show. Last year, she laughed as Kamala Harris joked about killing President Trump, Vice President Trump and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Variety didn’t mention the tens of thousands of dollars she also gave to Democrats in the 2016 election.
Variety didn’t mention that she’s friends with Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama, and has raved about them on the show many, many times before. Ellen called herself a Hillary supporter during the 2016 campaign.
In November, Ellen put together a liberal media montage celebrating Michelle Obama’s “impact” to promote her latest memoir.
If that’s not political, what is?
