On NBC's Meet the Press, anchor Chuck Todd made one of the most economically illiterate comments he's ever uttered (and there's stiff competition on that front). During an interview Sunday with Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) who is also serving as the National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman, Todd suggested that more immigration into the United States would be the best way to solve the forty-year-high inflation that's currently ravaging American consumers and dove the United States into a recession.
Before getting to that comment, Todd asked Scott what the Republican plan for bringing down inflation would be if the party takes control of Congress on Tuesday. "What’s the first bill you guys can pass that you think can impact inflation?" Todd asked.
Since Scott has a background in business and didn't spend his entire life in politics or media working to get Democrats elected as Todd did, he knew that reckless government spending is the cause of inflation, not lack of immigration.
"We've got to get our budget in control, we gotta figure out how to balance the budget, so that's the first thing we have had to do," Scott said in response to Todd's question.
Todd then jumped in and showed his ignorance of economic and fiscal policy:
All the experts say legal immigration is the number one thing we need to deal with in Congress, in order to deal with inflation. Everything else is on the Fed. But that’s the number one issue. Are you guys going to deal with that?
"I hope we deal with, first, securing the border, figure out how to have legal immigration, where people who want to live our dream can come in here," Scott responded.
He ended by noting how: "we have to figure out how to spend our money better. We’ve got to figure out do we get to a balanced budget and preserve the programs we care about. That’s what we have to do if we don’t we’ll never get inflation under control."
Todd's plan seems to be to continue spending the nation into bankruptcy and an inflationary spiral all the while flooding the country with more immigrants.
