Hasan Slimes Musk: Will Hand Twitter to 'Neo-Nazi' GOP, Musk Fires Back

May 2nd, 2022 5:58 PM

It seems the more time passes since Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, the more the most deranged voices on MSNBC meltdown. Proof of this was on Sunday night when the always unhinged leftist host Mehdi Hasan decided to freak out that Musk will somehow hand Twitter over to the “neo-Nazi” Republican Party.

Hasan used the opening segment of the second hour of his eponymously named Mehdi Hasan Show to freak out over Musk sharing a meme on Twitter that shows how far-left the Democrat Party has shifted since 2008:

The conservative movement as a whole has become infinitely more reactionary, xenophobic, and authoritarian. I thought that was undeniable, that everyone who’s sane and sensible knew this. Everyone, apparently, except the world's richest man, Elon Musk, billionaire love child of a 4Chan forum, and a Zambian emerald mind, is in the process of taking over Twitter.

According to Hasan, the Republican Party is the party that has shifted rightward since 2008 because Romney was the 2012 GOP nominee and is now a “RINO pariah” who in ten years went from “GOP leader to bleeding heart woke outcast.” What Hasan fails to realize is Romney is not the same person is was in 2012 and his loss had soured a lot of people in the base.

In contrast, according to Hasan, the Democratic Party hasn’t moved left at all since 2008 because Joe Biden was Barack Obama’s running mate and now he is the leader of his party along with “pro-coal conservative West Virginian Joe Manchin.”

Proving once and for all that he has complete disdain for anyone to the right of him, Hasan claimed “America's far-left wants to give us free health care and free childcare” while “America's far-right wants to give us white supremacy and no democracy.”

Continuing his demonization of the Republican Party and Elon Musk, Hasan wailed that:

We are living through an unspeakably dangerous moment the pro-QAnon, pro-neo-Nazi faction of the Republican Party is poised to expand dramatically, come the midterms. With just two years away from Donald Trump, very possibly re-seizing executive power. If that happens, we may look back on this past week, as a pivotal moment. When a petulant and not so bright billionaire casually bought one of the most influential messaging machines, and just handed it to the far-right.

On Monday morning, Grabien founder Tom Elliot posted the soundbite of the above comment on Twitter, and Elon Musk responded to MSNBC and NBC’s hypocrisy that this is the same news network that covered up Hunter Biden’s laptop and the sexual assaults by prominent Democrats like Harvey Weinstein and Matt Lauer.

Good for Elon Musk for calling NBC & MSNBC out on their leftist bias!

MEHDI HASAN: For decades, now America's grand old party has pivoted hard to the right on every issue imaginable. And not just to the right, but to the extreme paranoid conspiracists fringe of American public life. And I'm sorry to say, handing that platform on a platter to the far-right. Don't believe me? Think Musk is a genius in all walks of life, that he's a complicated complex character, with no obvious politics? Sorry to disappoint you. In fact, some of you may be familiar with a certain viral meme that must shed a few days ago. The thrust of the meme is rather simple, between 2008 and 2021, America's political left has moved drastically further to the far left but America's political right hasn't shifted one inch.

It is unfortunately a far from novel, though ridiculous argument. Identical sentiments that routinely whined by the likes of Bill Maher, and Sam Harris, and Andrew Sullivan. It's the go-to darling talking point of a very particular tribe of mostly white, mostly male, mostly middle-aged self-described contrarian, and the pundit class. Contrarians who have no problem parroting right-wing Republican propaganda. I mean, imagine seeing Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert and Ron DeSantis banning math textbooks, and Greg Abbott busing migrants to Washington, D.C. and saying, Democrats, they’re the crazy extreme ones!

So what do Musk & co. say in response to all of this? Well, they claim the change they’re talking about is less about policies and more of an atmospheric evolution. Politics feels differently, they say, there's been a vibe shift as Gen Z might put it. For a moment, let's leave aside the development of the facts don't care about your feelings, folks, who suddenly are very in touch with their feelings. Though, let's engage with their contingent earnestly. In 2008, Joe Biden lost the Democratic primary to a significantly more liberal opponent, Barack Obama. He was subsequently pragmatically selected as Obama's VP, specifically because he and his moderate blue dog hair, was ever so moderate and ever so palatable to the American electorate.

That Joe Biden, the milk toast moderate, is now in 2022, the standard-bearer of all Democrats. He's the head of America's liberal party, sitting in the White House, he alongside pro-coal conservative West Virginian Joe Manchin, set the liberal left agenda. Wow! Real radical left! Now, let's consider the Republican body which you’ll recall in 2012, nominated one Mitt Romney to spearhead their chance for the White House. Yes, Mitt Romney now, RINO pariah Mitt Romney. The man who in ten years, went from GOP leader to bleeding heart woke outcast. A man who we must note, never shifted a single, on a single one of his policy positions. He's the same Mitt Romney on every issue, but his party has gone way to the right of him.

So tell me again how it feels like the Democrats have gone rogue, did they happen to launch a coup, that I missed? Did they suddenly start accusing their opponents of eating babies? I mean, it's easy in American discourse to talk simplistically about the far-left and the far-right as two equally dangerous fringe blocks. Elon Musk has done it plenty of times just in the past week. But here's the difference. America's far-left wants to give us free health care and free childcare. America's far-right wants to give us white supremacy and no democracy. And this asymmetrical polarization of U.S. Politics would be laughable if it weren’t so horrifying.
