Appearing as a guest on Thursday's All In with Chris Hayes, MSNBC's AM Joy host Joy Reid likened President Donald Trump to a "king" and Republicans as "courtiers" who tolerate the king because they want his help to do things against "the commoners" whom they "couldn't give a damn about."
As the group discussed Republican reaction to Trump's recent tweet attacking MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski, Reid declared:
There's no cost to them coming out today and pretending that they still have a moral conscience after endorsing Donald Trump. But the reality is, so Donald Trump thinks of himself as a king. Obviously his children are part of the family business of running the country, right? He's the king. So you can sort of think of Republicans in Congress as the courtiers to the king, right? And so the courtiers to the king may despise the king, they may think the king is vulgar.
As host Hayes injected, "In fact, they often do," she added:
They often do, and they may talk about the king and look askance at his sort of disgraceful behavior. But there are things that courtiers want to do to the commoners. And they don't necessarily respect the commoners. There are things they want to do to the commoners -- and the king helps them do it because the king is the guy who has to deal with them. It's the king that's got to sell to the commoners. They don't even have to deal with them.
This is an interesting line of argument from Reid, who graduated from Harvard and surely makes a six-figure income at MSNBC because she was an Obama courtier. The MSNBC host's demonization of Republicans continued:
Remember the people who elected Donald Trump can't stand Paul Ryan and his friends that want to take their health care. They never liked them. Donald Trump is a means to an end. Donald Trump is the guy who's going to go out there and sell to the people these Republicans couldn't give a damn about. He's going to sell them on losing their health care and make is sound good. That's all his purpose is for them.
