HBO's Maher: Pence 'Super Hates Gay People,' 'Hates the Poor'

July 18th, 2016 11:54 AM

On Friday's Real Time, HBO host Bill Maher attacked presumptive Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence as someone who "hates poor people" and "super, super hates gay people," who, because being Catholic "wasn't oppressive enough," "became an evangelical Christian."

He then attacked Donald Trump and his son as "a**holes," and compared Trump's children to the infamous sons of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, calling them "Uday and Qusay."

Nearing the end of the show, Maher brought up Pence and began by lambasting him for some of his socially conservative views:

I first heard about this guy a couple of years ago when he came out for religious freedom laws. These are the laws that allow restaurants not to feed gay people -- as Jesus would have wanted. He hates all the right things. He's a total climate denier, climate change denier -- that's not happening. Really bad on abortion.

The HBO comedian then added:

Hates the poor and super, super hates gay people. He is for gay conversion therapy, you know, where you pray away the gay because that works. He says kids from a heterosexual family with two heterosexual parents come out healthier and more stable -- like the stable guy at the top of the ticket. Against gay marriage, against Don't Ask Don't Tell in the military. He's gay, right? I mean, nobody who is this anti-gay is ever-

After pausing for audience applause and laughter, he got in a dig at Christianity as he continued:

And he's a former Catholic. And that wasn't oppressive enough, so he became an evangelical Christian. And he's owned and operated by the Koch brothers. What do you think of him?

As panel member and conservative CNN commentator S.E. Cupp praised Pence for his "credibility," Maher jumped in to deride the Trump family because of speculation that Pence was chosen on the advice of Trump's children:

His kids are running the show. His kids -- they're his Dick Cheney. This is scary. This is so Third World. Talk about red flags. This is such a red flag. But this is so banana republic when your kids -- Uday and Qusay-

After Cupp defended Trump's children as "really great," Maher shot back: "The kids are not really great. One of them is an a**hole who shoots lions in Africa. They're not really great."

He then griped: "We're electing the Trump kids if you vote for this a**hole."

Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Friday, July 15, Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO:

BILL MAHER: Let's talk about Mike Pence. I almost forgot about Mike Pence. Trump announced on Twitter Mike Pence is his vice presidential choice. I first heard about this guy a couple of years ago when he came out for religious freedom laws. These are the laws that allow restaurants not to feed gay people -- as Jesus would have wanted. He hates all the right things. He's a total climate denier, climate change denier -- that's not happening. Really bad on abortion.

I mean, nobody who is this anti-gay is ever- (pauses for audience laughter and applause)

And he's a former Catholic. And that wasn't oppressive enough, so he became an evangelical Christian. And he's owned and operated by the Koch brothers. What do you think of him?

S.E. CUPP, CNN POLITICAL COMMENTATOR: Well, with that setup -- he's, I know Mike Pence. I've interviewed Mike Pence at length. He's a very good person and frankly a surprisingly credible pick for Donald Trump. I'm surprised Donald Trump was able to get-

MAHER: It's the kids.

CUPP: -as credible and credibly conservative.

MAHER: His kids are running the show. His kids-

CUPP: Well, that's right. They're the only ones who will tell him, "Here's what you need."

MAHER: They're his Dick Cheney. This is scary. This is so Third World. Talk about red flags. This is such a red flag. But this is so banana republic when your kids -- Uday and Qusay-

CUPP: I know the kids. The kids are really great, but the problem with-
MAHER: The kids are not really great.

CUPP: They're really, really good people.

MAHER: One of them is an a**hole who shoots lions in Africa. They're not really great.

CUPP: He's not an a**hole. They're great.

MAHER: Oh, they're not great. Oh, stop it.

CUPP: They're great. The problem with Mike Pence-

MAHER: But we're electing them. Let's not be -- kid ourselves. We're electing the Trump kids if you vote for this a**hole.
