Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart’s effort to drag America into socialism continued on Wednesday’s edition of The Weekly Show podcast when he and economist Kathryn Anne Edwards both claimed that conservative economics “treat people like shit.” Later, during the audience Q&A portion of the show, Stewart would also claim those policies are killing people.
Towards the end of their discussion, Edwards declared, “I frame the economic arguments as, you know, they've, the conservative-neoliberal agenda for so long has been ‘We own growth.’ They don't own growth. They don't own growth. They don't grow the economy faster because they treat people like shit. That's not a better way to grow.”
Economist Kathryn Anne Edwards tells Jon Stewart that "the conservative-neoliberal agenda", which they appear to believe just means anyone who does not believe in just handing out free stuff or raising the minimum wage, "They don't own growth. Based on the preceding 75 minutes, Edwards and Stewart would define the “conservative-neoliberal agenda” as opposition to a progressive wish list of free stuff, including universal health care, universal child care, paid family leave, after-school care, universal summer programming, and an increased minimum wage. Recently, Stewart has also recently gone to bat for rent and price controls.
A happy Stewart eventually responded, “Clip it! Clip it right now and send it out over the airwaves, Kathryn Anne Edwards, economist, writer, and host of Optimist Economy. I so appreciate your thoughts on this, your spirit, your content, all those different things. I'm so happy. And if there's anything that I take away from this is remain optimistic, purely out of spite. They have continued to treat humans like shit. And you think—you think you can break us, motherfucker. You cannot.”
Edwards then urged, “Jon, hold in your mind your least favorite Republican in Congress and imagine how happy—”
After Stewart began describing Sen. Mitch McConnell, Edwards continued, “Imagine how even happier he would look if he was like, ‘Hey, good news everyone, Jon Stewart doesn’t think that the balance of power will ever change in the U.S. in workers’ favor, so he’s going to give up on caring.’”
A few minutes later, producer Brittany Mehmedovic wondered on behalf of a listener, “If the Democrats win the House and the Senate… should they try to impeach Trump? Or would that be a strategic mistake since he won't be convicted?”
Continuing with the performative profanity, Stewart answered, “Well, what has any of that even—we've already shown there's no accountability in there. What I want to see is a full government effort on rebalancing this economy. And this is about triage. And the corruption of that family—fucking, let them drain us like they think they're going to drain us. Wall it off so it doesn't infect the rest of the economy. And spend a total government effort at rebalancing labor versus capital with real ideas about—like the ones that Kathryn was saying.”
When asked what he wants Democrats to do should they win, Stewart says, "on the triage list of what's wrong in this country, it is—'I'm sorry, sir, you're going to have to stay in the waiting room because this guy just got shot. And it sounds to me like you just have a sore… pic.twitter.com/oBghkZ1Fts

He then asserted current policies are getting people killed:
That's where all their efforts should be. I don't want to see a fucking five-act, performative play of House hearings. I just don't want to see it. I don't want to see everybody having the opportunity to pantomime accountability, because you know they're actually not going to bring it. You want to do some investigations and some shit. That's great. But on the triage list of what's wrong in this country, it is—‘I'm sorry, sir, you're going to have to stay in the waiting room because this guy just got shot. And it sounds to me like you just have a sore throat.’ Like, do the shit that actually is killing people right now.”
Stewart loves to talk health care policy and always simplifies it to anyone who disagrees with him being a heartless corporate Scrooge who only cares about money. He never wants to talk about waiting lines in single-payer countries or how the government may view the cost of end-of-life care.
Still, Stewart sought to compare health care policy to fixing potholes, “So, accomplish—Mamdani it, which pothole you need filled? Fuck and fill it. Govern.”
That’s an awful analogy, but when you dumb policy discussions down to “Agree with me or you favor people dying,” it is not unexpected.
Here is a transcript for the October 7 show:
Comedy Central The Weekly Show
10/7/2026
KATHRYN ANNE EDWARDS: But I frame the economic arguments as, you know, they've, the conservative-neoliberal agenda for so long has been “We own growth.” They don't own growth. They don't own growth. They don't grow the economy faster because they treat people like shit. That's not a better way to grow.
JON STEWART: Yes!
EDWARDS: That's one way to grow that hurts. We own growth. Growth is on us when you have labor force participation, that is growth. And that growth can come from treating people like human beings and treating the economy works for us and not the other way around.
STEWART: Clip it!
EDWARDS: A hundred percent.
STEWART: They have continued to treat humans like shit. And you think—you think you can break us, motherfucker. You cannot.
EDWARS: Jon, hold in your mind your least favorite Republican in Congress and imagine how happy—
STEWART: I’m doing it right now.
EDWARDS: Yeah.
STEWART: I'm going to wait. He's in a wheelchair giving me a peace sign.
EDWARDS: Imagine how even happier he would look if he was like, “Hey, good news everyone, Jon Stewart doesn’t think that the balance of power will ever change in the U.S. in workers’ favor, so he’s going to give up on caring.”
…
BRITTANY MEHMEDOVIC: Jon, if the Democrats win the House and the Senate—
STEWART: What?
MEHMEDOVIC: Fingers crossed. Should they try to impeach Trump? Or would that be a strategic mistake since he won't be convicted?
STEWART: Well, what has any of that even—we've already shown there's no accountability in there. What I want to see is a full government effort on rebalancing this economy. And this is about triage. And the corruption of that family—fucking, let them drain us like they think they're going to drain us. Wall it off so it doesn't infect the rest of the economy. And spend a total government effort at rebalancing labor versus capital with real ideas about—like the ones that Kathryn was saying.
That's where all their efforts should be. I don't want to see a fucking five-act, performative play of House hearings. I just don't want to see it. I don't want to see everybody having the opportunity to pantomime accountability, because you know they're actually not going to bring it. You want to do some investigations and some shit. That's great. But on the triage list of what's wrong in this country, it is—“I'm sorry, sir, you're going to have to stay in the waiting room because this guy just got shot. And it sounds to me like you just have a sore throat.”
Like, do the shit that actually is killing people right now. That's all. Too much? Was that too?
GILLIAN SPEAR: No, no. I think just the right level, yes.
STEWART: Like, we've been in those hearings. If you couldn't bring accountability to January 6th in two years, what confidence do any of us have that you're going to be able to untangle Eric and Don's drone company?
MEHMEDOVIC: Truly, yes.
SPEAR: I do want them to be a little scared, though. That's it. It's like—
STEWART: Scared of what? What are they scared of? There is not a person of that power and privilege that can't figure out how to run out the clock on a two-year investigation. So, accomplish—Mamdani it, which pothole you need filled? Fuck and fill it. Govern.
