Comedy Central’s The Daily Show host-of-the-week Desi Lydic was dismayed on Thursday at recent polling that still showed high levels of support for President Trump among Republicans. Under the guise of self-deprecating humor, she compared those who still support Trump with a fictitious version of herself who set up a Jared Fogle babysitter fan club.
Lydic introduced a clip of the always energetic CNN polling data guru Harry Enten by recapping a previous clip of an event Trump recently did at the White House with military moms, “Inflation is rising, corruption is through the roof, we are losing a war he shouldn't have started, and he's spending his days rambling about autocorrect and building a ballroom for himself and Melody? Surely at this point, he's got to be losing support among Republicans.”
Melody refers to Melody Wolfe, who was the mother of West Virginia National Guard Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, who was shot in Washington, D.C., in November.
Next to a board that showed that Trump’s current favorability among Republicans is 84 percent, which is only one point lower than what it was in 2018, Enten declared, “There's this myth that's going on right now that, ‘Oh, Trump is really losing support among Republicans.’ But compared to other midterm cycles, he's just as popular with Republicans as he has ever been.”
Lydic then made her analogy, “His base is still sticking with him after everything? Look, I know it's hard to admit you're wrong. Take it from me, the creator of the Facebook group, ‘Jared Fogle would make the most awesome babysitter!’ But at this point, you've got to cut your losses! I mean, what is it? Do you have a humiliation kink or something?
Before anyone could object to being compared to someone who cheerleads for someone convicted of several child sex crimes, Lydic played a clip of MS NOW’s Chris Hayes, “This polling to me, jumped out at me. They asked Republicans who would win in a physical fight with Trump. Would you be able to beat up Donald Trump or would he beat you up? 39 percent of Republicans said Trump would beat me up.”
Stupid polling questions deserve stupid results, which Lydic sort of acknowledged, “So, you have a humiliation kink. But you really think you'd lose a fight to an 80-year-old man? I mean, come on, Republicans, believe in yourself. Where's that 'storming the Capitol confidence’? To be fair, this is an incredibly weird phone call to receive. ‘Yeah, Dave? It's the polling company. You think you can take President Trump, you [bleep] pussy?’"
Desi Lydic’s parents are Fox News-watching conservatives, but their differences have not affected their relationship. That is good to know, but why can’t Lydic transfer those sentiments to others when she is hosting The Daily Show?

DESI LYDIC: Inflation is rising, corruption is through the roof, we are losing a war he shouldn't have started, and he's spending his days rambling about autocorrect and building a ballroom for himself and Melody? Surely at this point, he's got to be losing support among Republicans.
HARRY ENTEN: There's this myth that's going on right now that, “Oh, Trump is really losing support among Republicans." But compared to other midterm cycles, he's just as popular with Republicans as he has ever been.
LYDIC: His base is still sticking with him after everything? Look, I know it's hard to admit you're wrong. Take it from me, the creator of the Facebook group, "Jared Fogle would make the most awesome babysitter!" But at this point, you've got to cut your losses! I mean, what is it? Do you have a humiliation kink or something?
CHRIS HAYES: This polling to me, jumped out at me. They asked Republicans who would win in a physical fight with Trump. Would you be able to beat up Donald Trump or would he beat you up? 39 percent of Republicans said Trump would beat me up.
LYDIC: So, you have a humiliation kink. But you really think you'd lose a fight to an 80-year-old man? I mean, come on, Republicans, believe in yourself. Where's that "storming the Capitol confidence"? To be fair, this is an incredibly weird phone call to receive. "Yeah, Dave? It's the polling company. You think you can take President Trump, you [bleep] pussy?"
