Amid Sexual References, Bee Tells NRA, GOP to 'Read the Room, Freaks'

Someone needs tell TBS’s Samantha Bee that simply making sexual references is not funny or edgy, because that is what the Full Frontal host did on Thursday as part of a bitter rant where she told believers in gun rights to “read the room, freaks” after the mass shooting in Uvalde.

Bee seemed confused by the fact that the NRA does not blame itself or inanimate objects for the shooting, “If you thought the unspeakable horror of last week might have convinced the NRA to cancel its annual circle jerk of a gun convention in [beep] Texas no less, you'd be wrong.”

A clip of CNN’s Ryan Young was then played with Young reporting, “The NRA has condemned the Uvalde shooting, but decided to press ahead with its gatherings.”

Bee then returned, “Oh my god, read the room, freaks.” Shoehorning more references to sex acts into her diatribe, Bee continued, “To be fair there were some changes to the NRA’s lemon party. The Grand Old Night of Freedom Party was canceled after artists like Don McLean and Lee Greenwood took their one and only songs and pulled out. Unfortunately, when it comes to people whose parents we wished had pulled out, no such luck.”

Two more clips were then played. One was of Gov. Greg Abbott declaring “Moments like this tear apart the very fabric of a community. A community that until Tuesday never thought that a tragedy like this could ever happen in such a quiet south Texas town.”

The second was of former President Trump, “There's no substitute for a strong mom and a great dad.”

Conflating absent parents with parents who were murdered, Bee retorted “Wise words but he didn't have to say that to a group of orphans.”

Bee then proceeded to undermine the entire point of her screed, “Look. if you're surprised the NRA Is still kicking around you're not alone. It's been in legal and financial jeopardy for years. But it turns out its ‘gun rights above all rights’ message has been so ingrained in the Republican Party, the GOP will still hold a gun gala just days after a school shooting.”

If the NRA’s internal affairs are such a mess, that would suggest that the reason the GOP favors gun rights is because that is what its voters believe, not because the NRA has bought them off with their money.
