Telemundo Condemns TX Governor Abbott for Calling Border Crisis An 'Invasion'

May 4th, 2022 1:09 PM

A Telemundo report purportedly on how Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) Alejandro Mayorkas warned undocumented migrants not to come to the United States swiftly turned into a smear against Texas Governor Greg Abbott for using the word "invaders" to describe the deluge of migrants currently crossing the border into the Lone Star state.

It took just 25 seconds for anchor Felicidad Aveleyra to change the subject from ´Don´t Come´, to asking correspondent Edgar Muñoz, “Why does Gov. Greg Abbott insist on calling immigrants invaders?”

EDGARD MUÑOZ: In effect, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is trying to take the persecution of immigrants at the border one step further. He tries to label the great number of immigrants who are in fact crossing the Rio Grande and the desert, just south of this territory, as invaders in order to have more power, according to The New York Times. But the Texas governor really means it: he wants to call immigrants invaders.

A sad fact Felicidad, and I´ll share it; over the weekend, a 38-year-old Nicaraguan died precisely at Eagle Pass over the river where the National Guard did not intervene after what happened a few days ago when a member of the National Guard, unfortunately, died trying to rescue an immigrant in the river.

FELICIDAD AVELEYRA: Wow- well, a very sad situation. Very delicate that they get called invaders

Muñoz´s cringe-worthy answer began with him accusing Abbott of “trying to take the persecution of immigrants at the border one step further. He tries to label the great number of immigrants who are in fact crossing the Rio Grande and the desert, just south of this territory, as invaders in order to have more power, according to The New York Times. But the Texas governor really means it: he wants to call immigrants invaders." Even the reporter acknowledges that indeed - large numbers of immigrants are crossing into the United States.

Yet, while the team proceeded to bring in Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador – and midterm elections- into the equation so as to validate their claim, it was the reporter´s closing comment that smeared the law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line on a daily basis to help preserve our national security.

Muñoz proceeded to condemn the Texas National Guard for failing to intervene with individuals making the illegal and extremely dangerous river crossings even after one of their members recently drowned while trying to save two (not one as the report states) migrants later found to be drug traffickers, a fact that was also omitted in the Telemundo News midday report.

All eyes are watching the crisis at the border as it continues to spiral downward, with the blessing and encouragement of the media. In particular, the Spanish-speaking conglomerates that continue to thrive - and survive - thanks to yes, invasion at the southern border.

FELICIDAD AVELEYRA: Don't come; that´s the message that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has clearly sent to the thousands of migrants waiting to cross the southern border to enter the United States. And meanwhile, the president of Mexico has made a request to the governor of Texas. We go live to Edgar Muñoz from Houston. Good afternoon Edgar. Why does Gov. Greg Abbott insist on calling immigrants invaders?

EDGARD MUÑOZ: Well, there are many explanations, but a huge controversy has been unleashed Felicidad. Pleased to greet you. In effect, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is trying to take the persecution of immigrants at the border one step further. He tries calling the great number of immigrants who are in effect crossing the Rio Grande and the desert, just south of this territory, as invaders to have more power, according to The New York Times. But the Texas governor really means it: he wants to declare immigrants as invaders. He wants to declare powers of war; however, some experts have said that this is obviously an extreme because at no time has there been a military invasion like in Ukraine. However, Governor Greg Abbott continues with the Lone Star operation, and even three days ago he said that he will invest $500 million for 10 thousand troops precisely on the border and also, we witnessed last week, the presence also of operations by governors, the governments of Tamaulipas, of Coahuila, of Nuevo León, to prevent the passage of migrants through the southern border.

AVELEYRA: Edgar, what did President Andrés Manuel López Obrador say to the governor of Texas?

MUÑOZ: Well, we're going to hear what Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said, but really the governor of Texas is serious about it and wants to call immigrants invaders. But first let's listen to the president of Mexico.

ANDRÉS MANUEL LÓPEZ OBRADOR, PRES. MEXICO: I'm hearing that there are some politicians in the United States, as there are elections coming up, they are already making accusations, and there is one talking about declaring that we are invading them, that it is an invasion. I would tell him to lower the tone a little.

MUÑOZ: Well, what the president said follows the song of the Black Door, or the Golden Cage. A sad fact Felicidad, and I´ll share it; over the weekend, a 38-year-old Nicaraguan died precisely because at Eagle Pass over the river where the national guard did not intervene after what happened a few days ago when a member of the national guard unfortunately died trying to rescue an immigrant precisely in the river.

AVELEYRA: Wow- well a very sad situation. Very delicate that they get called invaders. Thank you for your report Edgar.

MUÑOZ: We will be on the lookout.
