There's little doubt that Chris Matthews is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. He also seems to be, whether willful or not, dull of hearing, as evidenced on the Monday edition of Hardball.
In his first segment on the September 22 program, MSNBC's Chris Matthews was informed by guest Carol Leonnig, a staff writer for the Washington Post, that Friday's White House fence-jumper, Omar Gonzalez, was found to have been carrying a serrated knife on his person, not a switchblade as Mr. Matthews believed.
Indeed, a federal criminal complaint notes Gonzalez had a 3.5-inch folding serrated knife on his person, not a switchblade.
Moments earlier in the opening tease, Matthews insisted Gonzalez was armed with a switchblade, which is defined as:
a kind of knife (pocketknife) with a folding or sliding blade attached to the handle which is opened by a spring or mechanism when a button or lever on the grip is pressed.
In a separate panel discussion later in the program, Matthews referred to the object in question as a switchblade.
