Twitter censors edited videos that the right tweets on the platform, but Twitter allowed a “deceptively edited” video of Trump to go viral.
Twitter came under fire for its hesitancy to remove a “deceptively edited” video of President Donald Trump from the platform. The video reportedly depicted him as “lost and disoriented,” according to The Daily Wire.
The video, which has since been removed from Twitter, allegedly depicted “Trump on the White House Lawn with a Marine One helicopter in the background. The president takes a few steps toward the chopper, then walked along the edge of the driveway, stops near a puddle and points at it,” according to The Daily Wire.
White House correspondent for Breitbart News Charlie Spiering pointed out in a tweet that Trump walked back to wait on First Lady Melania Trump to point out the puddle as a potential hazard in the unedited video. He also said that the video was from August of 2019.
Similarly, Will Steakin, a reporter for ABC News, tweeted “Trump was simply walking back to wait for FLOTUS here.”
The video was eventually removed, but not before racking up over two million views and 23 thousand retweets, according to Steakin. It is unclear whether it was removed voluntarily or whether Twitter took it down.
Historically, Twitter has not had an issue censoring videos that it has stated violate its “synthetic and manipulated media” policy. Just a few days ago, Twitter flagged a video posted by Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA). The platform also recently censored a post about COVID-19 deaths that Trump retweeted.
