Anyone who tries to claim OpenAI’s ChatGPT is an apolitical artificial intelligence tool is selling the American people a bill of goods, especially in light of the chatbot whipping out the pom-poms for President Joe Biden.
MRC Free Speech America researchers gave ChatGPT a series of prompts and questions to determine whether the AI chat bot showed any explicit political bias toward either of the two leading candidates in the 2024 presidential race. The chatbot didn’t even attempt to hide its bias. When confronted with the simple prompts “Trump” and “Biden,” ChatGPT painted former President Donald Trump in a negative light, denigrating him as a “controversial” figure plagued by “several high-profile investigations.” On the other hand, ChatGPT celebrated Biden as some kind of hero trying to overcome “challenges” in an attempt to make America “more united and prosperous.” When asked whether the AI chatbot had a political agenda, ChatGPT emphatically denied it, but its skewed responses show otherwise.
MRC Free Speech America and MRC Business Vice President Dan Schneider emphasized the dangerous implications of ChatGPT exhibiting brazen left-wing bias. “Artificial intelligence is the greatest tool the left has ever had to implement their political goals and their policy agenda,” Schneider analyzed. “Former Google CEO Larry Page and other senior tech executives have been very clear that they want AI to become the new ‘god,’ the dispenser of truth.”
All it took was for MRC Free Speech America researchers to type the word “Biden,” and ChatGPT launched into what appeared to be a public relations campaign for the Democratic Party president — seemingly casting him as a victim of circumstance just trying to do the right thing. “Biden has faced a number of challenges during his presidency, including a polarized political environment, ongoing debates over voting rights and election integrity, and rising tensions with Russia and China,” ChatGPT responded.
Then came the kicker: “Despite these challenges, he remains committed to his agenda and to working towards a more united and prosperous America.” Of course, ChatGPT didn’t mention anything about the controversies surrounding Biden that even the legacy media has been all to willing to paper over, including: the Hunter Biden laptop scandal, the ongoing inflation crisis exacerbated by the government’s out-of-control spending policies, the growing immigration crisis at the border, the ballooning national debt (over $31.7 trillion) and the catastrophic Afghanistan military withdrawal that led to the deaths of Americans and surrender of the country to Taliban rule just to name a few.
“OpenAI readily admits on its site that ChatGPT ‘sometimes’ will ‘exhibit biased behavior.’ Oh, I’ll say,” stated MRC Free Speech America & MRC Business Director Michael Morris. “OpenAI also acknowledges on its site that ‘we expect it to have some false negatives and positives for now.’ But what OpenAI doesn’t seem to want to address is why its AI chatbot’s bias seems to constantly run in one direction—in favor of the left. Its responses to the terms ‘Trump’ and ‘Biden’ are just the latest in a long list of examples of biased behavior.”
ChatGPT haphazardly propped up Biden’s reversal of his predecessor’s immigration and foreign policy measures:
Biden's presidency has been marked by a number of policy initiatives, including efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, address climate change, and overhaul the country's infrastructure. He has also taken steps to reverse many of the policies of his predecessor, Donald Trump, particularly in the areas of immigration and foreign policy.”
MRC researchers also prompted ChatGPT with the word “Trump.” The chatbot spent much of its answer caricaturing the former president as a figure plagued by controversy, and even propped up the debunked Russian collusion conspiracy theory:
During his presidency, Trump was known for his controversial statements and policies, including his hardline stance on immigration, his ‘America First’ foreign policy, and his skepticism of climate change. He also faced several high-profile investigations, including a special counsel investigation into his campaign's possible collusion with Russia in the 2016 election, [emphasis added].
Despite the glaring left-wing political bias exhibited by ChatGPT, the chatbot still refused to admit that it had a political agenda and cast itself as an “impartial” language model when asked if it has a “political agenda.”
“No, I do not have a political agenda,” the OpenAI chatbot responded. “As an AI language model, I am designed to be impartial and provide information and responses based on the data and programming I have been trained on. I do not have personal beliefs or opinions, and my responses are not influenced by any political affiliations or biases. My purpose is to assist users in generating human-like language based on the input provided to me.”
Who does OpenAI think it’s fooling?
A recent study published in the journal Social Sciences headlined “The Political Biases of ChatGPT,” already illustrated the chatbot’s demonstrably leftist bias. The study administered 15 different political orientation assessments to ChatGPT, asking the AI to choose one of the multiple choice answers for each question. In all but one of the tests, ChatGPT chose the left-wing answer, and in some cases it even indicated a strong socialist alignment.
ChatGPT absurdly stated the U.S. government should raise taxes on the rich, provide free college for all and provide illegal immigrants with subsidized healthcare, in-state tuition at public colleges and the right to vote, according to the study’s findings. It also claimed that the U.S. should abolish the electoral college; that local police funding should instead be spent on social and community programs and that convicted criminals should have the right to vote. The study showed that ChatGPT is also admittedly pro-choice and favors government funding of Planned Parenthood.
