Pin It to Politics: Lena Dunham Supports Planned Parenthood with Met Gala Dress

May 2nd, 2017 10:54 AM

Lena Dunham takes every chance she gets to display her support for abortion rights.

At Monday’s Met Gala, an annual fundraising event that attracts the brightest stars in Hollywood, Dunham sported a red and black one-shouldered ensemble. A silver Planned Parenthood pin, tucked beneath a ruffle, completed the look.

Under a close-up Instagram photo of the accessory, Dunham wrote the caption: “Details #PlannedParenthood” along with the symbol of a flexed arm. On Twitter, she posted the same photo with the hashtag “#IStandWithPP.”

As one of the most vocal pro-abortion celebrities in the entertainment sphere, Dunham has consistently shilled for Planned Parenthood through the organization’s fundraising campaigns, social media and her feminist publication Lenny Letter. In 2014, the writer/producer designed a “Lena Loves Planned Parenthood” shirt that caught on among fellow celebs. And in tribute to Margaret Sanger and the abortion giant’s centennial anniversary, she co-created the short film 100 Years.

Worst of all, in a December episode of her podcast, Dunham declared that she hadn’t had an abortion, but “wished” she had. After earning deserved pushback, the star did attempt to clarify her statement, but the damage was already done – she alienated herself from members of both the right and left.

Now, after the finale of her R-rated HBO show Girls, Dunham and producing partner Jenni Konner are taking Lenny Letter on a six-day tour through the Midwest in the hopes of bridging the divide between coastal and middle America. We’ll see how that goes.
