Tinsel Town is taking the “Day Without a Woman” quite seriously.
According to a Hollywood Reporter report, many entertainment companies have lent support to the movement by holding events, focusing content on women and encouraging female staffers to take the day off. Meanwhile, celebrities have been tweeting in solidarity.
UTA, one of the largest talent repping agencies in the world, is holding fundraisers for women-focused charities. MTV and Film Independent have automated their social media platforms (largely run by women), while Fusion TV is focusing programming on female-centered content. Digital studio New Form is shut down for the day.
Naturally, a number of celebrities have also been vocal.
Amy Schumer took to Instagram to express her thoughts, posting a picture of feminist icon Gloria Steinem with the hashtags #internationalwomensday and #adaywithoutawoman. Steinem held a sign that read “For the same reason little kids say ‘It’s not fair!!!’”
Underneath a picture of a woman balancing work and home, British pop star Adele wrote “Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good.” She added, “Luckily, this is not difficult.”
“I also want to honor everyone striking today and all of you who can't,” Lena Dunham chimed in. “#ADayWithoutAWoman is for all of us, and we will never stop fighting.”
Several stars noted Lady Liberty’s scheduled blackout for the day. “It's #internationalwomensday and this lady took a break last night to shine all on her own,” actress Jane Lynch wrote underneath a photo of the Statue of Liberty. “Wear red. Let's not get to work!”
“Happy international women's day,” comedian Chelsea Handler tweeted. Then in her usual acerbic style, she continued: @realDonaldTrump, a special congrats to all the int'l pussies that have been assaulted by you.”
J.K. Rowling also employed some biting sarcasm. After wishing her followers a happy International Women’s Day, the Harry Potter author added: “Or, as it’s often called on here [Twitter], #WhyIsn’tThereAnInternationalMensDay. (There is: November 19th).”
But some “woke” men did join in solidarity.
Andy Lassner, producer of the Ellen Show, indicated his support with the tweet: “I take orders from a woman at work. I take orders from a woman at home. I’m doing my part.”
Actor Antonio Banderas went further, commenting: “THE FUTURE IS FEMALE,” while Star Trek’s George Takei was “encouraged to see all the red shirts out today.”
Progressive actor Mark Ruffalo tweeted out a picture with fellow entertainer Danny DeVito. “Planned Parenthood helps all different kinds of people,” Ruffalo wrote. “For #WomensDay @DannyDeVito and I #StandWithPP!”
If the two actors stopped to think about it, they’d realize that thanks to Planned Parenthood, more than 3.6 million female babies were denied the chance to even make it into the world, let alone break the glass ceiling or achieve "equal rights."
That puts the “Day Without a Woman” in a whole new light.
