Hillary Clinton took the internet by storm last Thursday when she appeared on an awkward segment of the talk show “Between Two Ferns” with Zach Galifianakis. As it turns out, the Funny or Die host will not be conducting a similar dialogue with Trump.
In a September 24 interview with The Washington Times, Galifianakis declared that he wasn’t planning to invite the Republican presidential candidate. “He’s the kind of guy who likes attention – bad attention or good attention. So you’re dealing with a psychosis there that’s a little weird.”
He continued: “I wouldn’t have somebody on that’s so mentally challenged. I feel like I’d be taking advantage of him. And you can print that.”
Whether or not you like Mr. Trump, it’s a bit presumptuous to call a billionaire “mentally challenged.”
Breaking Funny or Die records, the Hillary Clinton episode received over 30 million views, 500,000 Facebook shares and 25,000 retweets in 24 hours. President Obama was the last politician to be interviewed by Galifianakis – that video now has over 16 million views on YouTube.
The clip was laughingly uncomfortable, but Clinton’s appearance was strategic. Although she stated “I really regret doing this” midway through the video, Funny or Die CEO Mike Farah told The Hollywood Reporter that the appearance was actually the candidate’s idea.
"She had seen the one we did with President Obama and thought it was really funny and effective," Farah said. "She told her staff about it and they got in touch with me."
Would Trump be equally savvy? "I don't know if Trump has the temperament to take that abuse,” Farah told THR. “But if he reached out, I guess there would be a potential conversation. It really does come down to Zach and Scott and if they feel like they can make it funny."
