News outlets are thrilled to have a new female role-model to cheer on. After a decade-long break, Fergie is back on the music scene with a brand new anthem, “M.I.L.F. $.”
If you are still blissfully ignorant about what the acronym “M.I.L.F” stands for, it’s a slang term used to describe a sexually attractive woman with kids. Or, a “Mother I’d Like to F*ck.” The term was popularized in the teen sex comedy American Pie.
Fergie’s new song “M.I.L.F. $” (pronounced “Milf Money” repeatedly during the song) is being praised for redefining the term as “Moms I’d Like to Follow.” Popsugar called it a “celebration of sexy moms everywhere” and Time wrote that “the lyrics of the song celebrate the power of the female breadwinner.”
Like the power of having worked hard to become successful? No, no, like having the power to sleep with whomever you want to! Because that’s what lyrics like “I could whip it up, fix you up straight away/ Come on in the front door, leaving at the back door” seem to imply. These women “Heard you in the mood for a little MILFshake” and welcome you “to the Dairy Dutchess Love Factory.”
Fergie, dubbed the “Dutchess of Pop” by MTV, and her fellow moms are fantastic role models, singing “Running amok, owning the spot/Buying the bar like I bought all these rocks.”
“Cause we I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T/ Do you know what that means?/ Can't see me B-R-O-K-E/ I'm P-A-I-D.” Well, at least they’re encouraging good spelling when they aren’t buying out the bar.
The music video features a star-studded cast, with A-list moms such as supermodel Chrissy Teigen, Kim Kardashian, and Grammy-award winning singer Ciara.
Sports Illustrated also praised the song. That’s to be expected, considering the collection of models donned very little clothing in the video. The music video features the moms dancing around stripper poles, lounging seductively in bubble baths, and doing normal, everyday things (such as gardening and taking the kids to school) while wearing lingerie.
Maxim created convenient gifs of the sexy cameos for those viewers who just can’t get enough of the video.
Talk show host Wendy Williams said “the song itself is really cute” and that “the people [who] are hating on this [song] are mums who haven't lost that last 20lbs.”
Remember, this about female empowerment! Hollywood women are constantly complaining about misogyny and only being valued for their looks. But this song, which centers entirely on how attractive these women are, is not, apparently, guilty of exactly what female celebs rail against. Typical Hollywood hypocrisy.
In a statement, Fergie, said that these women “have a career, a family, and still find the time to take care of themselves and feel sexy.”
That isn’t wrong. If a mom is able have it all, fantastic for her! But “M.I.L.F. $” sends the message that a mom’s worth is found in how sexually appealing she is post-kids. Does Fergie really want her son to grow up thinking that a mom who isn’t a “M.I.L.F.” isn’t cool? That’s not female empowerment.
Men will keep treating Hollywood starlets like sex objects if they keep acting like them.
