Feminist Gloria Steinem is thrilled about a new play about herself – and, presumably, her progressive stances on issues like abortion.
On Wednesday, Deadline broke the news that a play about feminist Gloria Steinem will officially open October 18. Written by Emily Mann and directed by Diane Paulus, Gloria: A Life will premiere in New York City at the Daryl Roth Theater. The play will boast “all-female creative and producing teams” and include two acts – with the second including the audience.
"What makes me feel enthusiastic about this whole idea is that after act one about my life, the audience will take over and become a talking circle with a life of its own," Steinem commented on the format, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In general, she added, “This exciting and unique production offers a new form of communicating through theater.”
While Steinem began her career as a journalist, today media herald her as a feminist icon as she speaks out on issues like abortion and religion.
Earlier this year, Steinem declared that no abortion means “no democracy” for women. In 2017, she stressed to The Week that “to be right-to-life for the fetus is to be dangerous for women's lives.” Two years earlier, Steinem even blamed Pope Francis for “causing” global warming by “forcing women to have children” to Cosmo.
But those comments didn’t stop Daryl Roth, the producer, from applauding Steinem.
“We feel it’s incredibly important to be telling this story at this moment in time,” she said. “Gloria’s life and all she has accomplished brings us hope, reminding us how far we’ve come, and inspiring a new generation to go further.”
This isn’t a one time thing. Deadline also noted that another upcoming film, My Life on the Road, will star Julianne Moore as Steinem.
