The social media mob is not too happy with Jeff Goldblum for his blistering critique of woke liberals who fetishize Muslim culture.
The Jurassic Park and Independence Day star dropped the mic on a recent episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race when, as a season 12 guest judge, he confronted a contestant sporting a hijab for sending a mixed message, pointing out the head scarf may be “anti-homosexuality” and “anti-woman.”
Needless to say, folks on the internet and Hollywood media discounted Goldblum’s point.
During a “stars and stripes”-themed runway segment of the program on April 24, Goldblum asked performer Jackie Cox about his outfit, which consisted of a red and white caftan and a blue hijab covered with white stars. Cox, an Iranian-Canadian whose drag name is Darius Rose, explained, “You can be Middle Eastern, you can be Muslim and you can still be American.”
Uh, yes, how brave of him. But guest judge Goldblum wasn’t buying it. He first got Rose to admit that his head scarf had no real significance beyond being a vapid virtue-signal. Jeff asked, “Are you religious?” to which the contestant responded he wasn’t. Well, strike one. Sounds like a bit of cultural appropriation and we all know that doesn’t fly.
Though the drag queen insisted that his “outfit really represents the importance that visibility for people of religious minorities need to have in this country,” and that’s where Goldblum made the necessary point. “Is there something in this religion that is anti-homosexuality and anti-woman? Does that complicate the issue?” the actor asked.
“I’m just raising it and thinking out loud and maybe being stupid,” Goldblum added, trying to neutralize any antagonistic tone.
Of course, it’s a good question, and one that seems completely fair to ask about a culture that historically employs corporal punishment for homosexuality. The fact that LGBTQ-ers champion it is one of the great ironies of identity politics. It’s also fair by the standard that the media and radical left savage Christians for merely disagreeing with homosexuality. For the past month Rev. Franklin Graham’s charity has been demonized by the left for espousing traditional marriage.
But for the left it became another double standard. In this case, Lefties on social media defended Islam and the drag queen. CNN contributor Wajahat Ali tweeted, “Jeff Goldblum's question about Islam to the performer wearing hijab in #DragRace always makes me wonder what folks say about us Muslims behind our backs.”
He added, “This was him holding back & trying to be sensitive. He's well-traveled, informed & he's from ‘liberal Hollywood.’ I wonder…” Oh, sure. Says the guy who links all Trump voters to white supremacists and was one-third of CNN host Don Lemon’s “Boomer Rube” segment.
Podcast host Ira Madison III tweeted, “Ummmmmmmmm..... Jeff Goldblum wyd (what you doing?)” and pro-Palestianian author/poet Omar Sakr tweeted, “as if America hasn't been anti-gay and anti-woman from the outset, or killed and displaced millions of Muslims, including women and queers…” Oh man. We’re the regressives here?
Even The Hollywood Reporter tried to educate Goldblum: “According to a recent survey by Public Religion Research Institute, more than half (52 percent) of American Muslims agreed that "society should approve of homosexuality." Ok so 48% of that entire group dissaproves? That’s a huge number they’re overlooking, considering the woke mob couldn’t even let one pro-Christian, chicken restaurant chain be anti-gay marriage.
