An illegal alien previously released twice before by sanctuary city Chicago is now in custody again and charged with murdering an 18-year-old woman on Thursday.
“Sheridan Gorman had her whole life ahead of her before this cold-blooded killer decided to end her life. She was failed by open border policies and sanctuary politicians who RELEASED this illegal alien TWICE before he went on to commit this heinous murder,” Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement released Sunday:
“According to local reports, 18-year-old Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman was shot and killed on Thursday morning around 1:00 am while she was walking in a park with friends. Medina-Medina is accused of approaching her while wearing a mask and armed with a gun.
“As she attempted to flee, he fired his gun and shot her. Gorman was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.”
DHS has filed a detainer request asking the sanctuary city to keep the illegal alien murder suspect, Venezuelan national Jose Medina-Medina, in custody and notify it before local law enforcement release him back into the community.
However, both Chicago and Illinois are so-called “sanctuaries” for illegal aliens. As such, they refuse to cooperate with U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) and have a policy of releasing illegal aliens and denying detainer requests.
On May 9, 2023, Medina-Medina was apprehended by the U.S. Border Patrol and released into the country under the Biden administration.
He was then released again on June 19, 2023, following an arrest for shoplifting in Chicago, Illinois.
“Court records show he was charged in a 2023 retail theft case out of downtown Chicago. A warrant for his arrest was issued after he failed to show up for court in that case,” WGN9 reports.
Medina is scheduled to appear in court Monday for a judge to determine whether or not to release him on bond.
When he was arrested on Friday, police found Medina in possession of a firearm, which is being tested in connection with the murder. He is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and a weapons violation.
In December 2025, ICE Director Todd Lyons sent a letter to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul calling on him to put the safety of Americans first and honor ICE arrest detainers of the more than 4,000 criminal illegal aliens in the state’s custody including murderers, sexual predators, and those convicted of or charged with weapons offenses.
The U.S. Justice Department has published a list of states, cities, and counties identified as having policies, laws, or regulations that impede enforcement of federal immigration laws.
