Global Warming Update: CNN Drops Science Unit and Miles O'Brien

Climate alarmists won't have Miles O'Brien to spread global warming hysteria on CNN anymore as the network has decided to eliminate its science and technology unit.

As reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Thursday, this "will result in the loss of seven jobs including veteran space correspondent Miles O’Brien."

Apparently, this isn't a cost-cutting move (h/t Chris Horner):

The decision to do away with science-and-tech reporting as a standalone unit is an editorial one, not an economic one, the media company said. Instead, those stories will be integrated into other parts of the network, CNN spokeswoman Christa Robinson said. For example, the bulk of the network’s environmental coverage is part of Anderson Cooper 360’s “Planet in Peril” occasional series.

The New York Times' Andrew Revkin views this as a growing trend in the industry:

Newspaper coverage of science outside of health and wellness is steadily eroding. Even here at The Times, where the Science Times section celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2003 and management has always supported strong science coverage, we (like everyone in print media) are doing ever more with less.

Of course, the cynic in me wonders if this move has anything to do with the decreased interest in global warming by the public as a result of the economic downturn.

Maybe more importantly, as we have now gone a full ten years with lower temperatures than the highly-reported peak in 1998 -- it's almost a certainty that 2008 will show a continuation of a global cooling trend -- one has to wonder if CNN is jumping off the global warming bandwagon.

After all, O'Brien represented one of that network's staunchest alarmists, and has been the subject of many NewsBusters articles. Some of my favorites include O'Brien:

  • Claiming that scientists who dispute anthropogenic global warming "are bought and paid for by the fossil fuel industry"
  • Sleeping during a senate hearing about how the media cover global warming
  • Having some combative interviews with Sen. James Inhofe (R-Ok.) here and here
  • Telling then Congressman J.C. Watts, "The scientific debate is over"
  • Calling climate realists "dead-enders," a "tiny fraction of a minority," and a "very small fringe"
  • Suggesting climate realists attending a global warming conference are flat earthers.

Needless to say, O'Brien has been the source of a lot of guffaws and chuckles for climate realists the world over.

As such, we wish him well, and hope that wherever he lands, he keeps in touch so that we can continue to be entertained by his lapses in reason.

"Science!  We dont need no

"Science!  We dont need no stikin science" to mangle a famous sorta line from "Treasure of Sierra Madre".  It has teh same type of connotation when used for teh moment and the MSM viewpoints.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Just another heave-ho for CNN

The CNN science unit got the same heave-ho as their journalism unit, their fact-check unit and their objectivity unit did years ago.

"will result in the loss

"spaced-out correspondent," surely.

If the current solar trend

You may be noticing the trends ... Returning to your childhood days of cold, goodbye warmy.

If the current solar trend continues, it will soon be so cold that even the dumbest amongst us will realize Al Gore is an idiot. Reality is hard, but it is inescapable.

Many solar climate scientists are saying we have crossed the solar threshold to a Dalton style minima, next stop will be the Maunder style minima, if the sun remains quite. The majority of opinion right now settle on a 20-30 year solar minima.

The modern solar maxim ended in October 2005.

To recap, the more normal state of Earth's climate these days is an ice age, where NYC is covered with 2000 feet of ice and the seas are about 100 meters lower than today. The Earth cycles between interglacials and glaciation about every 120,000 years, 110,000 glaciation, about 10,000 interglacial. The current interglacial, the Holocene period is now gone on for over 11,000 years. We are due for change ... It's just not the change Al Gore and Obamanuts are selling you.

Prof Carter has a 4 part youtube video on the subject, here is part 1 http://www.youtube.c...

Good evening snooker

Algore will simply say that the environmental conditions that were causung "global warming" are now causing "global cooling" and we still need the crippling regulations. His jemmings will believe him and he will continue to rake in millions at our expense.

Fight Global Warming

I very dedicated  young woman asked me on a street some time ago if I wanted to help fight global warming. I replied,  "No - have you seen my heating bills?"  She ran off when I said no rational person would believe that a minor infrared absorber and trace gas would drive major temperature fluctuations.

She is probably out now asking people to sign "clean carbonless coal" petitiions.

My favorite question

"Do you know what photosynthesis is"? The answer usually results in a blank stare, followed by err, uhh, ahhh - you know the standard Obama answer.

Then I go for broke with my follow up question, -- "do you know what would happen to Earth's plants if we eliminated all atmospheric CO2" -- Another blank stare.

Try it yourself.

Lesson from the 2008 election, it's very easy to make idiot voters out of ignorant people. The gubbermint screwl system is eager to supply as many ignorants as they possibly can.

Ohhh, the horror! Who will

Ohhh, the horror! Who will be there to inform us when the tidal waves reach Topeka, Southern California is completely under water and Florida is but a mere clump of land.

Well

I live at 5 feet above sea level in Florida and I am not moving. I am betting on a really big beach.

A real "science and

A real "science and technology unit" would have probably helped CNN gain viewership. But their attempts at hardcore Gore Does Science was just cheap porno for frothing at the mouth tree huggers.

One can only hope this is a

One can only hope this is a trend of things to come.  Claiming editorial considerations over economic is an interesting admission when you think about it.  The MSM up to this point has ignored economic considerations with their unpopular bias, lecturing and slobbering over Obama.

I sense there will be a stone cold silence of the MSM over AGW as they did with Global Cooling of the 70s.  As a tactical consideration, they basically have to avoid the issue for about 5 years which will be long enough for the public to forget the whole thing just like last time around.  In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they declared victory of lower CO2 emission rates from the current economic slow down and then said the AGW models had to be revised (tuned) to account for the reduction lasting through 2100.  Now if they were to really play this smart they would hang Al Gore out to dry as a green money grubbing profiteer, thus rehabilitating the MSM in the eyes of the public.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

Or is this merely a

Or is this merely a decision made now that heavy coverage of global warming is no longer necessary, due to the change of parties in the White House. Hammering Bush will no longer be necessary.

See, the Barack Obama presidency has already succeeded in wiping out the number one cause of global warming... hysterical media coverage.

No Longer Needed

Their guy will soon be in the White House.  Their majorities in the House and Senate will be increasing.  The car companies are on their knees before Congress, gushing about their "green" efforts.  There's no longer a need to have extra shills running around costing CNN valuable assets.

For Miles, it's too bad he wasn't vehemently anti-401k or firearms ownership, or maybe even private property rights.  There's still some "educating" needed for the soiled masses on those issues.

Cwg... Along with all

Cwg...

Along with all that you mentioned, why O announced yesterday Richardson was going to be taking care of making sure green energy happens...jobs for all, no more foreign oil dependency...of course this totally excludes oil drilling here within (adding a projected 2 million jobs, we can't have that)...why no, heck they want those oil/gas prices to rise...beware people, this 43 dollar a barrel oil isn't going to last forever.

Let's not forget Cap and Trade coming down the pike...soon.

Obama's Green Jobs Fantasy

Obama is delusional about how jobs are created. The typical socialist mentality is to believe that government can create jobs, when all it does is create make-work welfare jobs and rob capital from the private sector that creates real sustainable jobs the market needs.

All government jobs

End in the same place, the unemployment line. After 8 years of testing the theorey, FDR proved it absolutely true. Unemployment was higher at the end of his firts eight years, as it was at the beginning ...

Before we get into FDR II, maybe we should look at how FDR I worked
out. That view is best summed up by 1939 admission of FDR’s Treasury
Secretary Henry Morgenthau, in which he said:

“We are spending more than we have ever spent before, and it does not work. We have never made good on our promises . . . I say after eight years of this administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started . . . And an enormous debt to boot!”

Oh... my heart be

Oh... my heart be still!

Now if we could just get rid of Planet in Peril, along with 360 and Anderson Cooper.

Btw...we were in the single digits here, colder yet temps. expected tomorrow....snow and more snow expected over the week-end and next week, be ready people to the east of me, it's a comin' your way.

OPIE O'BRIEN

Maybe Opie (as we used to call him in high school) could do CNN and himself a favor and do an expose on his own mother's SEC problems back when she was an "investment advisor" here in Detroit.

Do ya think the cold

Do ya think the cold weather for the past two years has anything to do with people not buying this crap anymore?

Sad thing is, your new President still drinks the kool-aid.
