Senate Debates Global Warming, CNN Anchor Snoozes

O'Brien, during a more wakeful moment
As already noted here on NewsBusters, the Senate held a hearing today examining the role of the media in promoting climate alarmism. With others covering the newsmaking part of the discussion, I decided to drop by to observe things from a blogger's point of view.

I went into the hearing expecting it would be more interesting than your typical congressional hearing and wasn't disappointed. Dr. David Deming, a geophysicist from the University of Oklahoma recounted an experience he had with an NPR reporter who hung up on him after he declined to say that he thought global temperature increases were human-caused.

Apparently I was not joined in my assessment of things by CNN "American Morning" anchor Miles O'Brien who fell asleep during the discussion, according to several witnesses. Only a colleague's nudge prevented the slumbering former science correspondent from missing the entire discussion. One would think that O'Brien could have scared up some more interest considering his ongoing feud with Sen. Inhofe. The two have tangled on O'Brien's CNN show and both have denounced each other from their respective platforms.

I also heard some interesting scientific debate as to whether ice core temperature readings can really be used as a reliable indicator of whether carbon dioxide is related to global climate changes. Don't expect to hear much about this, though, since the CO2 proponent, Dr. Daniel Schrag of Harvard, was less-than-articulate arguing the affirmative. As of the writing of this posting, I haven't found a single news source that quoted from today's hearing. I did see and converse with several reporters but so far have yet to read any coverage.

What I did find online, though, was an AP article which briefly mentioned the hearing but quoted no one other than California Democrat Barbara Boxer, the incoming EPW chair. It went out late today and could easily have quoted from any of the Republican members of the committee (or Wednesday's hearing itself) but did not.

In the committee room, it was striking to me just how inept that the global warming alarmists seem to be at making their arguments. While many scientists do indeed take the position that humans' carbon dioxide emissions do cause global warming, they and their political allies seemed quite poor at making their case.

Boxer provided the best example. She began her statement with a grab bag of short, context-less quotations from various businesses and government agencies about how global warming is a humongous problem that needs immediate action. Most of her quotes were from non-scientific groups and were not even about the subject of the media's coverage of climate change, the topic of the hearing.

That's bad enough as a rhetorical device but apparently it wasn't bad enough for Boxer. In the middle of the hearing, she reverted to quoting cue cards of media coverage of the issue, ostensibly to show how the press is not being led by alarmists. Unfortunately for her, though, her quotations (from such bastions of conservatism as the New York Times as the Tulsa World) did just the opposite, at least if you didn't automatically agree with her. When Inhofe and my colleague at the Business and Media Institute Dan Gainor pointed out her problem, Boxer seemed utterly oblivious.

It only got worse for Boxer, though, as she reverted to the soundbites once again (using many of the same ones she'd already quoted previously) at the end of her testimony but with an added twist. Instead of asking the witnesses what they thought about a specific statement, the California Democrat asked them to “raise your hand” if you disagree with one of her out-of-context quotes. At first, hostile witnesses played along but eventually it got so absurd that Dr. Deming finally called her on it.

None of this seemed to bother a reporter from Roll Call with whom I was seated. She seemed decidedly against Inhofe and scoffed whenever he or one of his witnesses would challenge the liberal point of view. I didn't catch her name but I wasn't exactly surprised since besides the fact that most MSM reporters ideologically line up with Democrats, Barbara Boxer did one thing well—framing the hearings as a matter of whether the government was trying to control the news media.

That was far from the case as anyone who wasn't asleep could have observed.

Idiot

Calling redstatesredkoolaid an idiot is too simple.  Puffed-up, clueless, crunchy idiot?  Hmmm, that's a little closer.

So... people who side with the significant amount of scientists who believe global warming is a natural phenomenon that has occured for millions of years should just kill themselves?  What are you, seven years old?

And "clean our air?"  Air quality in America (as opposed to much of the sewer that is the rest of the world) is better today than it was 100 years ago.

We have refused to be blackmailed by UN thugs into something as suicidal as Kyoto, which other countries pompously sign up for... AND THEN IGNORE.  Ah, but that's the liberal way.  It's what you say and how you pose... not what you actually do.  Hell, Wal-Mart has done more in the past two years to reduce "greenhouse emissions" than most countries!

So... corporations are what's wrong?  You are the classic lib who claims to love "jobs" (yeah, right), but hate those nasty things called "businesses" that provide them.  Yeah, it's corporate America that's keeping you down.  Well, that and the fact you sound like a bitter liberal loser.

I'd wish you a Merry Christmas... but let's be real... when's the last time you were "merry?"  Have an environmentally respectful holiday.  And be careful when running your car in your garage.  Wouldn't want anything bad to happen to you.  The world needs idiots like you to provide laughs.

It's fitting that O'Brien too

It's fitting that O'Brien took a nap since he and the rest of the Drive-By Media have been asleep at the wheel for years when it comes to the truth.

SHHHHHH, don't wake the spoiled children.

If elected, I vow to repeal the 17th Amendment, change the

limits for all politicians in federal government.

Support global warming! Buy

Support global warming! Buy an SUV! Own a Coal burning stove, burn coal for fun!

Make sure that everything liberals say to stop doing, do twice as much. We need global warming.

It's supposed to get cold ton

It's supposed to get cold tonight,

better chuck a few more hummers on the fire.

No Soup For You

Better be really bad so Santa will bring you some coal! Quick! Say something naughty!

Zapper, Barbara's Stockings = Little Room on Sleigh

The problem for Santa will be the overload of coal he will need to fill Barbara's stocking. There will be no room for anything else on the sleigh.

Santa and all the naughty boy

Santa and all the naughty boys and girls are part of the problem. All that dirty, polluting, greenhouse gas producing coal.

Santa needs to find an environmentally friendly alternative. Like a wind mill off the coast of Hyannis Port for wind bags.

I am glad that the writing

I am glad that the writing is so consistent here so that when newspaprs do pick it up it makes a good impact. It's no mystery why liberal media doesn't go near this stuff. They simply have poor evidence and discount debating skills. The worse thing you can do is call them on it. Stewart and Colbert was invented precisely for this phenomenon, to sidestep any real arguments with comedy -- gotta say sumthin.

Snoozing

This is interesting. Just last night I was experimenting online with the sounds of various thunderstorms to see if they would help me sleep. I will probably get a thunderstorm CD for that purpose since such sounds do help me sleep. In the case of Miles O'Brien, he only needs to get a CD of the sounds of a Global Warming Senate hearing to put him to sleep. Apparently facts contrary to his ideology causes instant drowsiness in him.

Poor Miles.  How could he d

Poor Miles.  How could he doze off at a hearing on a subject so near and dear to his heart?  Maybe it was just too WARM in the hearing room.

With all the hot air generate

With all the hot air generated in that tiny space by the "Global Warming Is Real and Will Kill Us Tomorrow" movement, I probably would've fallen asleep too.

I'm not a scientist.  I don'

I'm not a scientist.  I don't know from CO2 or greenhouse gas.  I know gas..  but that's another subject.   I have, however, come to trust my instincts when it comes to people and who they are in the their heart of hearts.  I remember attending a Scholar Athlete banquet back in '85 or '86, wherein my son, I'm so proud of, was being honored for being a..  Scholar Athelete! Way to go Dude! He's a Scholar Son/Brother/Husband/Dad and alot more!

Anyway,  Algore was the guest speaker at this banquet.

Here's the deal.  I love to observe people, and so quite naturally I began to watch this guy.  I'd probably not heard his name more that a couple times in my life prior to that evening, but immediately my instincts kicked into high gear.  Pure unadulterated BS!  Some things never change.  Wake up America!  Global Warming is a political ploy to gain Global Control through taxation.  We will be taxed by the UN, by the EU and anybody else that can weasel their way into the line.  Scientists and CO2 be damned!  None of that matters!  It's the inherent POWER to be gained when people are duped into believing that we are going to drown or be blown away by some super cell caused by Global Warming.

One last thing.  I'm a Believer..  in God.  The God.  I'm tellin' you right now, we could be blown away by a super cell or whatever you can drum up in your hysterical mind..  but it won't be caused by this Global Warming stuff.  If God wants to blow us away, it WILL happen.

rimsky

Thanks for your comment.  It reminded me of something.

In "The Day After Tomorrow" isn't there some sort of global flood destroying the entire planet or something?  You know, these wackos would be much better off if they just read the Bible.  In Genesis, after the flood, God promised that He would never again destroy the earth with a flood.

I feel better already.

fossten, thanks for reminding

fossten, thanks for reminding ME.  Very good point.  God does keep His promises.  So, I guess it'll have to be the mother of all earthquakes...  can't blame THAT eventuality on Global Warming.

To me the most startling aspect of this whole discussion is just how arrogant the GW folks can be to assume that that humans could possibly have the power to change the forces of nature, which is to say the Power of God.  I mean, does anybody really think about that?

Congratulations, Matthew.  I

Congratulations, Matthew.  I notice Matt Drudge has a link to your article on his website.

This is the current forecast for Atlanta:

Be prepared. Temperatures will be brutal by tonight and tomorrow morning. Temperatures will drop during the day. Winds will pick up from the northwest this afternoon. Gusts may be as high as 25-35 mph. There is a wind advisory for north Georgia and metro Atlanta starting at noon today, through tomorrow morning. Low's in the morning could drop to the teens and low 20s. Even colder air rolls in for Saturday morning. Bring in the pets. It will be too cold for them to be outside, especially at night. No rain in the forcast until Tuesday.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Hey, Al, global warming my..........!!!!!!!!!

Matt...are we sure that this

Matt...are we sure that this Barbara Boxer, that the AP quotes, is real? I am beginning to question anything the AP prints any more....I watched part of this on the computer here at work, on my break. And I agree with you that the alarmists were less than convincing. Dr. Schrag was inept during his time. He couldent make a point with a pencil sharpener. Makes me  glad I dident go to Harvard.

Off the subject

Starting yesterday, my 'Back' button stopped working in this site.  It still works fine on all other sites.   I could understand if my 'left arrow' was disabled, but this I don't get.  The site locks up and I have to re-enter from scratch.  Any suggestion?
