In Reality, Nearly Ninety Percent of Mexican Cartel Weapons DON'T Come From U.S.

Apparently, America’s love of firearms has not rubbed off on our Mexican neighbors quite as much as the mainstream media led us to believe.

It has been widely reported that 90 percent of the weapons used in the Mexican drug cartel wars come from America. As it turns out, that statistic is simply incorrect. According to the figures obtained from ICE and ATF officials by Fox News, only about 17 percent of the weapons recovered from cartel-related crime scenes in Mexico actually originate in the United States.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Correspondent William LaJeunesse in an April 2 report (first aired at 12:27PM, then a shorter segment with an ATF agent at 2:55PM:

According to the Mexican Attorney General, in the last two years, they've recovered about thirty thousand, twenty-nine thousand weapons in Mexico. They have submitted about only one-third of those to the United States for tracing. And according to testimony that we have from the special agent in charge, in Phoenix, of the ATF, only about six thousand of those were successfully traced, and about ninety percent of those came from the U.S. But basically, the bottom line here is that according to our figures, which we got from them, eighty-three percent of the guns that have been recovered in Mexico at these crime scenes are not from the United States.

One might ask how the United States Secretary of State might have made such an error in her math.

LaJeunesse explains:

Well one reason is, it's basically the sampling issue. Number one, Mexico is finding guns at the crime scene which may have no markings at all. They may be clearly Chinese or Russian weapons, and so they are not submitting those to the United States for, quote, tracing. A U.S. weapon has a serial number on it, a manufacturer on it, it says where it is made. So clearly, Mexico is not going to give over weapons to the U.S. for tracing which clearly don't come from here. We had an ICE official, special agent in charge here in Phoenix tell us, and I'm quoting from him, “Not every weapon seized in Mexico has a serial number. Those are not submitted. Only we trace weapons with U.S. markings.

So to summarize, ninety percent of the traced weapons that Mexico decides to give back to us come from the United States – a sample which doesn’t include the vast majority of the weapons found. Seventy-three percent outside the mark is very selective truth-telling by the mainstream media.

Sun Tzu was never wiser than when he said “All warfare is based on deception.” So when Ben Tracy (CBS News), Andrea Mitchell (NBC News) and myriad hosts from CNN all claim that the Mexican drug war is the fault of lax gun laws in the United States, you know they're all reading from the same playbook.

thanks for this article. I knew something was up with the "math" being used butnot being a math guy I couldn't explain it properly to the leftist nutballs here.

is there a link to the media source for this article I can have my 2nd Amendment advocacy group post?

"DumbAssity of Dope"

The same play book indeed

It is the same one that falsely claimed 1 million illegal abortions being done in the 1970's to get abortion legalized. The same one that claims that homosexuals are 10% or more of the population. It's the play book of bald-faced breathtaking exaggeration to trick people into thinking that a problem is bigger than it actually is. The Gun charges are serious

These are all serious charges. And, of course, liberals don't think the facts should get in the way -- it's the seriousness of the charge that's important. After all, 42 million Americans could be uninsured -- if all the American-hating, Spanish-speaking-only, illegals are counted as Americans. And if the younger people who simply don't want to buy insurance (but who should be forced to like they do in Massachusetts, or be fined) are included in the numbers.

About Time

Let's watch now to see if this correction to a popular liberal myth makes it into the liberal media.

Fox News also pointed out that obviously the military-only weapons found in Mexico are not being purchased at gun shops in the USA, because as we all know, you can't buy them over the counter.

And to the above poster's list of liberal myths, let's add the ridiculous civilian death tolls claimed in Iraq of 500,000+. The debunking of the original bad data published in The Lancet did not get nearly the publicity that the original material did.

Let's also hope that the other Fox News shows that helped propagate the myth, like BOR and Greta, also note this correcton.

sw - agree that we will probably not hear ONE word

to counter this FALSE statement from anyone except Fox!

Thank you, Mr. Murdoch for realizing America needed a network that recognized and stood up for the TRUTH ;-)

Slick Willie: You are

Slick Willie:

You are correct.  The amusing thing is that if a reporter knew anything about military type weaponry and simply looked at the photos of the confiscated weaponry that abound in the press he/she would realize that the weaponry on display largely does NOT originate in the US.

Much of the weaponry on display consists of:

  •  40MM grenades for grenade launchers impossible to get within the US, but not impossible to purchase from the Mexican military.
  • Riflegrenades impossible to purchase within the US, nor used by the US military, but in great supply in latin america.
  • SKS carbines in large lots sizes which likely originate within the third World where they will be cost effective, but not really desired on the US market.
  • Foreign manufactured handguns.

The Mexicans are simply attempting to assuage their corruptive guilt at the cost of the glamorous neighbor to the north.

SKS carbines...

...are actually quite common in America, as far as assault weapons go.  They are fantastic weapons - my only complaint with them is their reliability; the ones that I have seen tend to jam too easily.  But for Mexican drug lords, using 7.62 ammo is really the key; it's easy to get and comparatively very cheap.

My all-time favorite dumb quote from a media personality was the CNN host that talked about the American AK-47s.  For those of you who might not know, AK-47s were invented by the Soviets, copied by the Chinese, and never (as far as I can find out) manufactured by the U.S., because we were too busy perfecting M16s.  If they're using AKs, they're not from America.

Mike: Concur about the

Mike:

Concur about the availability of small quantities of SKS, but my sticking point is that the odds of procurring a table full of them or another large quantity from a US provider is dubious.

Logic would dictate that a quantity of over five would NOT be purchased from a US supplier but rather from NORINCO or a subsidiery and shipped to Mexico in a tuna boat.

The photos I have seen have shown larger quantites of 20+ SKS lined up on a talbe beside rifle grenades, 40mm Grenades, and other foreign manufacutred material which makes their purchase on the local market in the US near impossible.

what i'd really like to know is was this story that the 90% number was total bunk reported anywhere else other than fox?  i don't know, because i don't watch the drive bys.

Oh just a question? How much reporting is done on the TEA parties by the msm.Seems it is just those Fox news folks.

As I've said before on this

As I've said before on this subject, the Socialists want people to believe that all firearms are bad.  So bad that you can topple a government with the merchandise you can purchase at any sporting goods store, thereby threatening their monopoly on power.  Only an IDIOT would believe that the Mexican Army is loosing to a bunch of criminals armed by Wal-Mart.  LOL  Ok, so perhaps that isn't such a big stretch, but still not likely.

Did Orwell predict the future?  Or are the enemies of freedom following Orwell's example?

LOL

Only an IDIOT would believe that the Mexican Army is loosing to a bunch of criminals armed by Wal-Mart.

 That made my day!

Reality? The advocacy/adversary media and Hillary Clinton...

...can't even spell it, much less undestand what it is.

And furthermore...

Now that my blood pressure is getting back to normal, let's take a look at the remaining 17%.

My interpretation of the 17% of guns in the full article is that this represents the fraction of weapons that were involved in Mexican crimes and [sent by Mexico to the USA for tracing]+[successfully traced and confirmed of US origin (ie 90%)].

The 17% therefore includes:

  • weapons sent by the US government to Mexico for the use of the Mexican military, and subsequently lost due to desertions (120,000 Mexican soldiers have deserted in the last 8 years), or stolen on delivery or later due to corruption or simple crime in Mexico.
  • It also includes weapons sold by the US military or other legitimate channels to other South American countries, subsequently stolen or lost in those countries and smuggled into Mexico via the Guatemala route described.
  • Weapons stolen by the hundreds of Mexican gangs in the USA and smuggled into Mexico.
  • Weapons legally purchased by Mexican citizens/US legal residents intended for their own personal protection, then taken back to Mexico for understandable reasons. (Which is a Mexican border customs issue.)

So the real question remains, of the 17%, how many were legally and illegally purchased in US retail gun stores?

I went to Mexico...

...a little over a year and a half ago, and while that doesn't make me an expert on Mexican customs, I can tell you that the Mexican border crossing went a like this:

  1. Walk up to passport stamping station with bags in hand.
  2. Knock on the glass to get the border guard's attention - it was a really good book...
  3. Walk over the border when the guard waves you through, no passport stamp required.

I could've been carrying bags of money to be laundered, and it wouldn't have slowed me down a bit.  Getting back over was a good bit more difficult, but it was still fairly easy in Nogales.  The guards don't really mess with a van full of American college students.

NYT's Backdoor Response?

Now that the obvious truth is out there, verified by common sense, it would appear that The New York Times will simply move on and attack our rights from another angle, but as always, use deception and lies under the umbrella of "Opinion."

Today's editorial, 'Astoundingly Flawed,' takes focus on carrying concealed weapons in national parks & wildlife refuges.

Here's a couple of paragraphs to get you started:

"In December, ignoring proper procedure and the risk to public safety, the Bush administration rushed through regulations allowing people to carry concealed, loaded guns in national parks and wildlife refuges. Fortunately, a federal judge has blocked this last-minute mischief, giving the Obama administration a fresh chance to do the right thing and withdraw the rule."

Yes, such mischief...........

"States routinely grant concealed carry licenses without proper background checks or training. Indeed, among the evidence Bush officials ignored in their haste to relax national park gun limits was the long list of violent crimes committed by dangerous people with state concealed carry licenses. Contrary to gun lobby claims, the evidence suggests that permitting concealed weapons drives up crime rather than decreasing it."

Washington Post to Ignore & Continue the BS

Check out today's Washington Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2009/04/03/ST2009040304424.html

The obvious contradiction between paragraphs three and four really speak to the bias and/or ignorance of the Post.......

"Mexican President Felipe Calderón has deployed the army to fight powerful drug cartels that are heavily armed with assault weapons and grenades -- arms that Mexican officials say come mostly from the United States. More than 10,100 people, including almost 1,000 soldiers and police officers, have been killed since Calderón launched the offensive in December 2006."

"Mexican officials, including Medina, have blamed loose U.S. gun-control laws for the weapons smuggled south, and he has repeatedly called on the United States to pass a ban on assault weapons."

Guess that the editor was too tired, too drunk or too lazy to run the usual shell game of fluffing between paragraphs to keep readers off-guard. Even a blind squirrel would find the contradiction; a squirrel's lifespan falls short of the age requirement for public education.

I hate to ask for it...

...but does anyone have a link to different media source that has verified these numbers?

Unfortunately, people on the other side of the aisle tend to dismiss anything from Fox News as a lie.

The Fox report...

...was directly quoting the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agency numbers, as well as ICE.  It wouldn't matter if Baghdad Bob were reporting it, they're raw numbers from a (supposedly) unbiased government agency.

What good would it do?

Knowing our present laws, common sense and a grasp of your local Walmart's inventory should be more than enough to know that the cartels do not derive superior firepower from "loose" American gun laws.

Cite all the sources you want, but doubtful you'll ever change the mind of a far-left lib. They don't care about individual lives, they believe in the state, the collective. Far better for you to fall victim to an assailant than save your own life by taking his/hers in self-defense. Only threats to the state can be justified for it is a threat to the ideology. War is easily justified for the very same reasons. It was never about the bodies!

Difficult to believe that we've already arrived at a point in history when our watchdog media has accepted this philosophy, but they have. Times have changed to the degree that even rogue militias now have some validity to their fears.

just the fact's

maybe they should ask the folk's like "zitgo- kid" where the 100'000. ak's he bought from the russian's went??or the one's " farc" have been storing over the years came from??

"Loose" gun laws lead to relative peace

It's rather telling that Mexico, with apperently strong gun control laws, are the one's fighting a military battle with their own criminal citizens, yet they try to blame America for that war against their own citizens even though America, with supposedly loose gun control laws, are not facing a similar situation with our citizens, even with the various criminal gangs that we have here (although those gangs do tend to war with each other, but that war rarely leads to an out and out battle with law abiding citizens like you find in Mexico).

Hay, Mexico, perhaps you should LOOSEN your gun laws so that the common citizen can be able to purchase the tools necessary to defend themselves against the criminals who are trying to kill them and you wouldn't need to send in your military to stop the criminals from killing unarmed citizens. Have you every thought about that, or are you just going to continue to blame others for not facing the same situation you're facing today due to your stupid gun laws? Inquiring minds what to know.
