Brent Bozell: The Get-Rush Campaign Isn't About What He Said

By Brent Bozell | March 05, 2012 | 20:52

A  A
Brent Bozell's picture

Rush Limbaugh was broadsided last week for attacking a star witness for the Democrats who demanded government force insurers to subsidize contraceptives. He called 30-year-old Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute.”

Let’s all agree Limbaugh crossed a line. He agrees. He posted an apology to Fluke “for the insulting word choices.” The scandal-ette should be over.

So why are the Left and the media still pushing and publicizing a campaign for advertisers to dump the Limbaugh show and end his career? Because it has little to do with his words. This is all about disingenuous politics. Liberals want this government-mandate controversy to be not about religious liberty, which is devastating, but about contraceptives, which works in their favor.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

That is intellectually dishonest.

They want to position conservatives as “anti-women.” That’s as ugly as it is untrue.

But Limbaugh’s words gave them the opening they needed – and they pounced.

Just how sensitive are liberals to the plight of women, anyway?

Let’s see how they react when one of their own savages women in ways Limbaugh would never dream of doing.

Everyone remembers Ed Schultz calling Laura Ingraham a “slut” on his radio show.

MSNBC suspended him for a week, but none of Schultz’s advertisers dropped his show under media pressure. There was no pressure. Some of the same sponsors now pulling out of Rush’s show still support Schultz.

What Schultz said is nothing compared to his colleagues.

Fellow talk show host Mike Malloy hoped Sarah Palin “drives herself into madness” and insisted Michele Bachmann is an “evil bitch from Hell” who would have gladly supervised the Holocaust.

Montel Williams rooted on Air America for Bachmann to slit her own wrist or throat.

Randi Rhodes insisted that teenage boys weren’t safe from Palin’s advances if they stayed over at her house. There’s no news coverage or “war on women” narrative when the mud-covered women are conservatives.

Maybe these hosts aren’t prominent enough?

Then consider the case study of Bill Maher, who’s welcomed all over TV news shows.

A year ago on his HBO show, he called Sarah Palin a “dumb twat.”

He followed up days later in a Dallas stand-up routine by calling Palin the C-word.

Last July on HBO, he said Palin was “a bully who sells patriotism like a pimp, and the leader of a strange family of inbred weirdos.”

Last September on his show, Maher said Palin would have sex with Rick Perry if he was black.

Maher bragged on his show Friday critics can’t touch him because “I don’t have sponsors.” But that doesn’t mean he should be coddled, either, and yet he’s regularly honored across the media as a special guest, be it news networks or entertainment shows.

Days after he called Palin the T-word, he appeared with then-CNN host Eliot Spitzer, where Spitzer concluded, “Your show is brilliant. I love watching it.”

On Sunday, Democratic Party chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz huffed on “Meet the Press” that "I don't know any woman in America that thinks that being called a slut is funny." But two months ago, she accepted an invitation to sit on the set with the man who called Palin a “c---.”

President Obama placed a tender phone call to Sandra Fluke Friday to express sympathy for Limbaugh’s harsh words. He never called Ingraham, or Palin. But his super PAC did cash that $1 million check from Maher.

Some outrage is so, so....targeted.

Limbaugh has been singled out and condemned across the national media – ABC, CBS, NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, NPR, PBS, Associated Press, The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and USA Today.

How many of these outlets have condemned Bill Maher with equal vigor for his attacks on Palin?

How many of these outlets condemned him at all?

A couple of years ago, “comedian” Louis CK “joked” on the Opie and Anthony radio show about Palin coming to the Republican convention “holding a baby that just came out of her f-ing, disgusting [C-word], her f-ing retard-making [C-word]. I hate her more than anybody,” he said.

On Twitter, this “comedian” attacked Palin in 2011 as a “f—ing jackoff [C-word]-face jazzy wondergirl” who “has a family of Chinese poor people living in her [C-word] hole.”

Guess which event this same fellow is headlining in June? -- The Radio and Television Correspondents Dinner.

“We’re very excited about having Louis C.K. at the dinner,” said Jay McMichael of CNN, who chairs the Radio and Television Correspondents Association’s executive committee. “This is an evening you’ll want to experience. We’re shaking things up, showcasing the unexpected, and delivering lots of laughs.”

The Left honors their own pundits as “brilliant” for verbally assaulting women, then circulates petitions calling for advertisers to drop the Limbaugh show because his “anti-woman tirades are appalling.”

To the Left, this is simply an opportunity to put their attacks on religious liberty in a feminist frame, and an opportunity to try and shut down Limbaugh. It is all about censorship and hypocrisy.

Right about Rush, wrong about the agenda...

Submitted by wizardjr on Mon, 03/05/2012 - 10:25pm.

This whole tempest in a teapot is not about Rush or contraceptives. It's a deliberate distraction from the crappy economy, which is a surefire loser for Obysmal.

The GOP should be hammering the heck out of Obysmal's failed Keynesian/socialist economic agenda. Instead, we're having a grand scale brouhaha over some bimbo trying to get free birth control pills. The LSM is of course aiding and abetting in this -

Submitted by GregE on Tue, 03/06/2012 - 12:52am.

It won't last as long as they'll "need" to adequately protect their King. Something else will need to take it's place, and you can be sure that's being discussed as we speak.

Though Rush's issue adds a few weeks to this current issue run.

I believe the Left is hoping that if they push hard enough and the media covers and continues the blatant double standard, that some conservative somewhere will snap and hurt someone or worse, so they can then hone in on that for who knows how long. We have seen situations in recent couple years where someone did snap and the media jumped on it immediately blaming right-wing this or that, before any info comes out, which then has shown otherwise. They don't care. They want it to happen, and they want it BAD.

Sounds bad, but I put NOTHING.........I mean NOTHING past these people.

It would have to be anyone who has the heart and the cojones for such an undertaking. It would have to be someone who places freedom, individual choice, and willingness to accept the consequences above all else.

The last time I checked, there is NO ONE in Washington with those credentials.

But we can still hope. Not for the hopey-changey hoax and chains, but for the real thing.

Here's how you know it's phony outrage:

Submitted by Phryj1 on Tue, 03/06/2012 - 12:58am.

The people going after Rush have never said a thing about Bill Maher calling Palin the c-word. Or numerous other times when a libtalker or other influential lefty personality has said something degrading and misogynistic about conservative women, said they want to "hate f*ck" conservatives, etc. In fact, it probably wouldn't matter what words Rush used, these same far-left hypocrites would still claim Rush was trying to silence Fluke and try to get advertisers to drop him.

And it is all a distraction. The entire birth control issue has been a way to deflect criticism away from Obama and make the GOP candidates look too extreme and falsely attack them as 'anti-women' (a laughable charge in and of itself, and hypocritical in light of libtalkers' frequent remarks demeaning to conservative women). The fact that they could try to take Rush down with it is just a fluke, no pun intended.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

The Get Ruch Campaign Will Fail --

Submitted by libBuster on Tue, 03/06/2012 - 9:34am.

The get Rush Campaign, like all other such campaigns will fail. It has nothing to do with real standards of conduct.

Pro-Flowers main selling season is over and they can quietly go back to Rush when the left wing news cycle moves on. If they don't it is their business which will be hurt, not Limbaughs.

Advertisers who bail risk losing the business of Rush's 20 million listeners. These customers were important enough to their business to advertise on the show. So there will be some drama and pretend compliance with left wing pressure groups. But in the end advertiseers will be baack or replaced by others.

It's just Saul Alinsky 101.

I thought you liked choosing where your money went. You don't think businesses should do the same. Flip flop!.

Anyways, testifying before Congress does not make you a public citizen. Running for President does. Thats the difference between Fluke and Palin.

All the examples you are finding are mostly one-off comments from people. Maher uses that language because he has to be edgy for comedic purposes, and sometimes it doesn't work. I certainly don't think Maher should use that language.

But what Rush did is much worse. He spent three days verbally assaulting this woman. He apologized for two words. He didn't apologize for completely misrepresenting her testimony (even Georgetown President thought Rush was way off base). He is not being asked to pay for her sex. She was asking that Private Insurance plans be mandated to cover birth control as part of basic womens health needs.

Submitted by killa37 on Tue, 03/06/2012 - 10:45am.

As usual, Mr. Damaged, your comment makes no sense. How do you come up with a 'flip flop' if someone decides to choose where their money is spent, based upon where someone else chooses what to do with THEIR money??? If a business makes the decision to pull their advertising on Rush's show, then anybody can make the same decision to NOT purchase their product.
Your 'reasoning' is useless.

As for the rebuked kook Fluck/Fluke.............there's not doubt, and the facts bear this out, that she is a complete plant in a well-orchestrated and executed plan to continue the fabricated assault on the Catholic Church, and Republicans, with regards to this phony-ass contraceptive issue in order to cover Boy Barry's useless and sorry ass on just about ANY of his failed policies, as well as to try and gin up the emotions of a lot of stupid women (who the REGIME discovered they were losing) into thinking that somebody was going to take something away from them - that they didn't even know about until this whole charade started.

I can think of a lot more adjectives to describe this little twerp Fluck/Fluke - but I'd be using them more directly on the people who are pulling her strings, because she's just another pawn in their game.

And you appear to agree with the idea that somebody else should be providing her with birth control as 'part of basic womens health needs', right??? That, Mr. Damage, is the REAL root of this whole arguement, and you're a part of the problem. Who knew that birth control was a 'basic womans health need', and that it should be 'free' for anybody who wants it.

With a thought process like this, it becomes much more painfully obvious to me that this poor country is getting flushed deeper and deeper into the toilet of dependancy, misery, irresponsibility, and idiocy.

Republicans cannot help themselves. They will once again flock to the RINO, romney. It's built into the political segments of their DNA.

One might have thought that romney's candidacy would have shriveled up, after he insisted on progressivity in the tax code, and aligned himself with the 99'ers, and revealed in at least one speech, that tax cuts have to be "paid for."  It's more than a little interesting that any normal person right-of-center would have stayed on the romney-train after that.

Yes, Gingrich has "baggage."  But so does obama. For each Newt "bag", there's a dozen "obama-bags"  begging to be opened- if that's the game the hypocritical dems wish to play.

Too bad Republicans and Conservatives have not/will not take Gingrich seriously.

Yes .. I forgot to mention his "I will fight to maintain the progressive tax code" comment which is second only to my belief that he is lying that he "will repeal 0BowMaocare." And yet, Republican establishment-types are all apparently jumping over one another to be the next to endorse him for President. So here we go again -- this is just as bad as nominating RINO's like Bob Dole and Juan McCain (a certain recipe for losing the election)! As much as I would like to have a pure candidate whom has never cheated on his wife, or who has no personal baggage, Newt in THE ONLY candidate of these four who will take the fight to 0BowMao! We are not voting for a Pope or a Pastor. We are voting for the best person to FIX THIS MESS that Hussein has created! And yet .. we are about to settle for "Progressive (RINO) Republican" Mittens; because he's been married to one woman (which IS admirable) and he has nice hair.

We have only ONE chance to repeal 0bamneycare next year. After that .. it becomes impossible. Mittens will NOT repeal it (i.e. "he is lying to you!")

Allstate's advertising purchase strategy has not included the Rush Limbaugh Show. Earlier today, we responded to inquiries about our advertising relationship with the show by stating we did not advertise on or sponsor it. As radio listeners notified us that they were hearing Allstate ads during the show this afternoon, we contacted the vendor that arranges for our advertising placements and discovered that an error had been made and advertising time had mistakenly been purchased for the show.

We regret providing mistaken information about this situation. We have asked our media buying firm to correct the error by discontinuing any advertising on the Rush Limbaugh Show moving forward in keeping with our original advertising plans and strategies.

These advertisers are going to lose some serious revenue by doing this.  Businesses don't stay alive for long, especially when they base their actions on a lie.....unless they get bailed out by the federal government.

These companies really need to stop putting idiotic CEOs in charge.  Just like this country really needs to stop putting the wrong (I won't say idiotic when they have bad designs for our country to destroy it) people in charge.

I did check out Sleep Numbers Facebook page, and the last I saw was that they were suspending their advertising on Rush's show.  I'm not sure what that means.  I hope it's just a CYA move on their part, but who knows.

I bought my original Sleep Number bed because of the way Limbaugh endorsed them, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.  I bought another one for a guest bedroom, I like it that much.  I'll wait and see what they do, officially, regarding advertising on Rush's show, and I won't base my feelings because of some kook named Sara who happens to work at a Sleep Number store in Plymouth Minnesota.

And I never pay that much attention to twitter as I don't do it, but too often people say some really dumbass things on there.(like Dax Shepard)

But I do pay attention to what a company does, and in this case, the company "suspending" advertising is the same as cutting off one's nose to spite the face.  That's DUMB business management.

Agreed

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Tue, 03/06/2012 - 12:10pm.

I agree entirely with it being a dumb decision just to suspend their advertising. It's going to be a never ending cycle of people taking offense about what somebody said on a political talkshow, be it radio or television. If a company is going to advertise on politically charged shows, then somebody is going to get offended. They should just issue a blanket statement like: "Sleep Number has long ago decided to advertise our beds on political talk shows that have strong opinions ranging across a broad spectrum. Our beds are purchased because of the superiority of our product, and not the opinion exposed on any particular venue. People of all political persuasions are thrilled with the quality of our beds. We will continue to try to reach as broad a market as possible for our beds, and will not be bullied by threats of boycotts." They then should get the talking pundits where they advertise, both left and right, to praise their statement and back them up.

Limbaugh's comments

Submitted by wbradk on Tue, 03/06/2012 - 2:08am.

Okay, Limbaugh should not have called the slut a slut. And, one understands why an honest, hardworking prostitute might feel insulted by Rush's use of the term to describe this woman. However, the hypocrisy of the outcries of "outrage" by the left is what is really out of bounds here. Anybody who has spent any time at a major American university that is infested by a "women's study" or "gender study" curriculum knows that most of the lunatics who partake in such nonsense are crazy sluts. Live with it.

pay for her having sex? What do you call a woman who spends $3,000 for birth control and expects someone else to pay for it?

What do you call a woman who goes to a Catholic college and wants to change their religious rules when she could have gone to any number of secular colleges that had no such rules?

What do you call a woman who is denied an appearance before a Congressional committee because she has no expertise on the subject at hand but does show up and testifies before willing Democrats under false pretenses?

What do you call a woman who wants other people to pay for sex change operations?

I'd call her an activist Liberal Democrat.

She was brought in by Carolyn Maloney, the same one who in 2010 brought in Stephen Colbert to talk about immigration. Yeah, that guy from Comedy(not) Central.(only thing good these days is South Park)

She made a mockery of the Congressional hearings then, she did it again with Fluke.  Fool them once, shame on Dems, fool them twice, shame on THEM!

Issa was right when he didn't want her speaking.

Similar playbook here. The government creates a crisis with the help of the media to distract voters from important issues doing election time. For liberals is community organizing at its best, something to learn here. Conservatives and non liberals should apply the same rules when someone from the left (radio or TV show) makes a derogatory comment about a Conservative (male or female), we should flood their sponsors with mails, calls, letters demanding they pull their ads from their shows -- like giving them a taste of their own medicine. Liberals will vote for Obama no matter what, it is the independants and the undecided that will take him out of office and they are the ones the Conservative movement needs to focus on. Wasting time convincing liberals that their messiah needs to get his "booty" out of the White House is simply pointless.

Re-definitions

Submitted by xraynova on Tue, 03/06/2012 - 9:22am.

... hmmm... let's see...

The democrats have redefined "perversion" such that it excludes homosexuals.

The democrats have redefined "marriage" such that it includes people of the same gender.

The democrats have redefined "socialism" such that it excludes government takeover of private enterprise.

Now they get their panties in a wad when Rush redefines "prostitution" to be the demand by person-A (e.g. a dem operative) to receive money from person-B (e.g. us) in order to have sex with person-C; and redefines "slut" to be anybody requiring $3 grand for rubbers.

Two things on this cost. If she's spending that kind of money for protection she must be extremely busy working and not going to school as she claims, also she must sweat a lot because her hair looks like she works out 7 hours a day and never washes it.

Get Rush Campaign

Submitted by NVRAT on Tue, 03/06/2012 - 11:44am.

I for one support Rush and what he said. Fluke is what she is a Democrat Operative that has Prostituted her self in public. He was right on when he said that this is not a subject that should reach Presidential Levels. It is proof however that the Democratic Party has reached and wants to stay in a sewage state of mind. We have had every show host on every National and Syndicated TV station (except FOX) emit personal attacks on anyone that opposes the Left Wing Liberal Democratic Party, especially the women that run against or exposes the truth of these corrupt demigods. The attacks include words that far exceed the word "Slut" or "Prostitute" and in some cases include the children of these Republican women saying her daughter should be "Raped" etc. no wonder the world is confused and uncertain about the American people we have fallen into a cesspool and the Main Stream Media proudly prints and verbally exposes this agenda to the world as though all Americans are the same. It is for these reasons that I do not support Hollywood, HBO, ABC,CBS,MSNBC, or NBC I don`t watch their broadcasts or go to their movies and I find that I get along very nicely and do not miss any of the putrid propaganda they spew out to the public. So you ask, how do I know what is going on? simple, there are many sources on the radio and internet that will give you the information a person requires to make a decision and define the truth. Please join me, you really can live without the Main Stream Media the Hollywood moguls and Special Media Productions.
