Q. How do you know when Barack Obama has set a dubious new record for presidential weakness? A. When Jimmy Carter's former top adviser mocks his anemic response to an international crisis.
On today's Morning Joe, Zbigniew Brzezinski argued that the US needs to discuss with Ukraine the provision of defensive weapons in the face of the Russian threat. He then mockingly observed: "the Ukrainians did ask us for help in that regard. Do you know what our answer has been? We offered them prepackaged food for their soldiers. Well, you can't win a military conflict by throwing pancakes at somebody." The laughter on the normally Obama-friendly set should still be ringing in the President's ears. Consider how dangerous it is to have a president who, even among his supporters, has become the butt of humor for his flaccid response in the face of international aggression.
Note: in the screengrab and video, you see Joe Scarborough and Obama fan Katty Kay openly laughing along with Zbig at his zinger. Poor Thomas Roberts seems abashed to see his hero mocked.
ZBIGNIEW BRZEZINSKI: I think we have to convince Putin that what he's doing is really risky to Russia itself. I think we've taken some steps in that direction, but I think they could be intensified. And I think talking, not doing much, but at least talking to the Ukrainians about if the need arises, providing them some defensive weaponry would make sense. It would send a signal. The Ukrainians did ask us for help in that regard. Do you know what our answer has been? We offered them prepackaged food for their soldiers. Well, you can't win a military conflict by throwing pancakes at somebody.
