Despite Hailing Liz, NBC Doubted Dick Cheney Deserved a Heart

While NBC’s Today show was eager to hail Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney for bashing fellow Republicans during an exclusive interview on Thursday, back in 2012, the broadcast questioned whether her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, deserved a life-saving heart transplant. That was just one of a number of instances where the network morning show trashed him as “one of the most controversial figures of our time” and “Darth Vader.”

During a report on then-71-year-old Dick Cheney’s heart transplant in March of 2012, the Today show touted how his vile left-wing critics “are questioning whether someone that old should be getting one.” The network’s chief medical editor at the time, Dr. Nancy Snyderman, wailed: “...this has raised a lot of ethical questions, moral questions, about whether the Vice President, in fact, should have received his heart against – ahead of other people. And, raises the question, how old is too old to receive such a precious transplant?”

In August of 2011, during an interview with the former Vice President about his new memoir, then-co-host Matt Lauer – now a disgraced serial sexual harasser – told Cheney that he was “the most divisive political figure in this country in a century.” After what amounted to an interrogation, as the camera panned out to the Today show plaza, it made sure to focus on a far-left protester holding up a sign that read: “Torture is a Crime: Investigate Cheney.”

During a profile of Cheney the previous day, correspondent Jamie Gangel described him this way: “A conservative hero to his fans, Darth Vader to his critics.” Lauer teased the segment by promising that Cheney “speaks out about his controversial new memoir” and “looks back on his controversial time in the White House.”

Just a few days before that, the show labeled Cheney “one of the most controversial figures of out time” and tossed around the adjective multiple times in a matter of a few minutes.

On top of all the Cheney bashing on NBC, in 2010, the late MSNBC host Ed Shultz launched into an insane tirade on his radio show about the former Vice President while actually reacting to a NewsBusters article: “You’re damn right, Dick Cheney’s heart's a political football. We ought to rip it out and kick it around and stuff it back in him.”

Despite her network’s history of hatred for the Cheney family, on Thursday, Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie had the audacity to ask Liz Cheney: “Your father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, is a veteran of a few political battles himself, what does he think about the stand that you’re taking?...Do you think he’s proud to be your father on this day?”

The liberal media are happy to trash conservative politicians until those politicians – or their close family members – are suddenly politically useful to them, then they become darlings to the same reporters.
