Comedian Ricky Gervais is tired of wealthy stars who think they are suffering by having to stay in their homes, saying that that he has “had enough of wealthy celebrities” who live in luxurious conditions while others are barely making ends meet.
In an article written by David Ng, a reporter for the Breitbart.com website, the British comedian stated in an interview that “health providers are risking their lives working around the clock in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic.” Ng also noted that Gervais has no patience for “pampered elites who whine about being stuck at home [and] have nothing to complain about compared to healthcare professionals.”
Gervais added:
These people are doing 14-hour shifts and not complaining. Wearing masks and being left with sores after risking their own health and their families’ health selflessly.
But then I see someone complaining about being in a mansion with a swimming pool. And, you know, honestly, I just don’t want to hear it.
It's not hard to figure out who Gervais is talking about. In a different story, Reuters explained that celebrity Ellen DeGeneres caught a lot of grief for this comment:
DeGeneres, whose daily television talk show had been off the air for three weeks because of a stay-at-home order, returned on Wednesday with a show filmed by her wife, actress Portia De Rossi, from one of their California homes.
“One thing that I’ve learned from being in quarantine is that people - this is like being in jail, is what it is,” quipped DeGeneres, who was filmed in an armchair looking out on vast, grassy lawns and mountains.
As NewsBusters reported in early January: Gervais hosted this year’s Golden Gloves ceremony, and he used the occasion to blast “virtue-signaling stars” who “make political speeches” when receiving awards. “You know nothing about the real world,” he declared. “Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg,” a teenage climate change activist.
“So if you do win an award tonight, don't use it as a platform to make a political speech, right?” Gervais asked. “You're in no position to lecture the public about anything." “So you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your god," he added.
