To quote a beloved children’s character, “Hollywood puts out some of the greatest trash I’ve ever seen.” Now Hollywood just uses it to be political.
So when Hollywood media, such as Entertainment Weekly, spends half their time counting down to the Oscar awards (only 156 days more, guys!), it’s telling to see the films and actors that get the biggest buzz. Like people decorating for Christmas in September, news and media outlets just can’t wait to attack Trump and conservatives with yet another awards show.
Films like The Shape of Water and Mother! apparently are contenders for the Academy. Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water was rife with its political message, so much so that Variety said that the “script does not wear it’s liberal anti-establishment credo lightly.” The Atlantic raved, “The Shape of Water is more directly applicable to the current debate raging over the White House’s hardline immigration policies and the emergence of the alt-right.”
Mother! was apparently an allegory for global warming, with almost blasphemous biblical undertones. Mother! was also one of the biggest box office flops in history, with a rare “F” rating from audiences.
Let’s not forget Steven Spielberg’s The Post, which although not released yet, was meant specifically to be an anti-Trump film. Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, “our favorite anti-Trump actors,” will no doubt get some nominations for their performance in a film about the Pentagon Papers.
“If there’s a thread to weave through this year’s contenders, it’s the power of words … they can rouse and stir a nation,” EW’s Sara Vilkomerson stated in September 29’s issue. It’s ironic that these words don’t really belong to the people in this case, but instead to a group of wealthy, out-of-touch actors, producers, and directors.
The actors most mentioned as contenders for nominations include, Annette Bening, Jennifer Lawrence, James Franco, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Emma Stone, who not only fundraise loudly for Planned Parenthood, but who also direct their “wrath and rage” at Trump and conservatives. No doubt, their acceptance speeches will be the stuff of liberal legend, modeling after Meryl Streep’s controversial Trump temper tantrum at the Golden Globes.
The 90th Oscar awards ceremony takes place on March 4, 2018. Brace yourselves. It’s going to be rough.
