It has been announced today that Showtime has given the go ahead for a 10 episode series of animated shows about President Donald Trump to air this Fall. So will this cartoon series be done in the spirit of good fun such as the way Vaughn Meader satirized John F. Kennedy in his First Family album over 50 years ago? Well, the fourth sentence of this Variety article reveals that probably won't be the case:
Donald Trump, the cartoon? Yes, it’s happening.
Showtime has greenlit an animated satirical series centered on the Trump White House, Variety has learned. The show hails from executive producer Stephen Colbert.
That's right. Colbert. Which means this cartoon should have humor that is about as subtle as a sledgehammer beating its message into a head. We actually don't have to wait until this Fall to find out just how unfunny it is since the Trump cartoon has already been appeared several times as a short feature on Colbert's show:
The animated show hails from CBS Television Studios and will be executive produced by Colbert and “Late Show” showrunner Chris Licht. Tim Luecke, who co-created the “Late Show” version of animated Trump, will serve as lead animator and co-executive producer.
So how unfunny has it been? Check it out for yourself.
Colbert should have listened to advice from the creators of a truly funny cartoon series, South Park to reduce Donald Trump jokes after falling into 'trap' of mocking him:
Trey Parker told The Los Angeles Times the show had fallen into the "trap" of mocking the US president in its episodes every week.
"We're becoming: 'Tune in to see what we're going to say about Trump.' Matt [Stone, co-creator] and I hated it but we got stuck in it somehow," he said.
Parker added he and Stone want the show, which has been running for 20 years, to return to its roots.
..."We fell into the same trap that Saturday Night Live fell into, where it was like, 'Dude, we're just becoming CNN now'."
Although this new Trump cartoon series seems doomed to fail, the good news is that Colbert can be very inadvertently funny on the topic of Trump. In fact he features prominently in the following Top Media Meltdowns on Election Night.
We expect more such meltdown humor from Colbert on Election Night 2020.
