Hillary Clinton and pop star Katy Perry, both born on October 26, have a special bond. So special, in fact, that Perry even dressed up like Clinton for Halloween (face mask and all). But now, Clinton is spending a day in Perry’s shoes.
On April 10, the singer took to Instagram to promote her footwear line with a photo of Clinton as her model. “POWER PUMP your way over to katyperrycollections.com for the last few hours of the spring 25% sale!” she wrote beneath the picture of the former presidential candidate sporting pointy toe, blush-pink pumps. “@HillaryClinton is wearing #TheHillary (OMG I LOVE HER SO MUCH).”
Yes, Perry did name the heels in Hillary’s honor. And yes, women’s media were all over it.
Harper’s Bazaar writer Lauren Alexis Fisher couldn’t contain her enthusiasm. “In quite possibly the greatest fashion plug of all time,” she exaggerated, “Hillary Clinton proved she's the #influencer brands should be targeting with just one Instagram post.”
“Can we get Hillary to review them???” Marie Claire assistant editor Chelsea Peng gushed. “Heel sturdy enough to kick in glass ceilings, 10/10 would recommend.”
“In case you’re interested in becoming the proud owner of your own Hillary shoes, they go for $139 online,” the writer informed readers (“A small price to pay to dress like one awesome woman,” Bustle’s Kali Borovic chimed in.) “And as you can see above, they’ve got moons and stars in the heels, which is just so fitting,” Peng concluded.
Indeed, the shoe’s description reads: “Step in and reach for the stars…”
At least Cosmo fashion editor Lauren Torgenson said what we’re all thinking. “It’s a fun design,” she commented, but “[to be honest], doesn't look much like the practical and somewhat somber footwear choices Hillary made on the campaign trail.”
When together, the pop star and her political idol always looked the odd couple – Hillary in her sensible attire, and Perry in the most outlandish of costumes, including an “H” emblazoned cape and turban.
During the 2016 campaign season, Perry was one of Hillary’s most vocal advocates. On November 29, Clinton returned the favor by surprising the pop star at Unicef’s Snowflake Ball, where she awarded Perry with the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award.
