Daily Kos Week in Review: What's Your Favorite Color?

October 16th, 2011 6:25 PM

In the 1990s, some argued that Bill Clinton was, figuratively, our first black president. This week, two Kossacks opined that Herman Cain would be, in effect, a white president, or at least a white nominee. One claimed that if it's Cain vs. Obama, the Hermanator will serve two purposes: punching bag for the invincible incumbent and insulation for Republicans from charges of racism. The other flatly accused Cain of selling out his fellow blacks.

As usual, each headline is preceded by the blogger's name or pseudonym.

chaunceydevega: Cain parrots white resentment and bigotry

...[T]he more Herb [sic] Cain is criticized by African Americans for his role as a professional racism apologist the more popular he will become with his White Conservative reactionary audience and sponsors. Call it the black conservative patted on the head by their white masters corollary to Newton's third law of motion...

...There is an argument that black conservatism is actually none too far ideologically from black nationalism. In another person, at another time, with a different history, could Herman Cain's barbershop pain have resulted in him becoming a Black Nationalist as opposed to a race traitor who serves as a human parrot for racially resentful and bigoted White Conservatives?...

Beetwasher: Racist Republicans will sacrifice Cain

...[O]n some level they realize that Obama is indeed going to clean their clocks in Nov, so if you need to offer up a sacrifice, well, may I remind you of Colin Powell?

I'm telling you, I think it's going to be Cain. I'm getting that feeling they are going to "offer him up"...

Since it IS racism that motivates them, they MUST shield themselves from those charges by nominating their "black friend"...

BrooklynBadBoy: Occupy Wall Street stands for the American dream

...[OWS protesters] still believe in the 18th Century notions of agrarian rebels. Liberty for these youth does not mean freedom from a British sovereign, but the ethic is the same. They want liberty from being thrown to and fro by a financialized economy that rewards gambling, fraud, and theft but punishes work, thrift and invention. They want liberty from a political system which not only ignores, but actively seeks to disenfranchise them. They want liberty from a global economy that benefits only a handful of people fortunate enough to be global citizens with private jets. They want liberty just as much as Americans did two centuries ago. They are doing what those young people of old did: assembling for their inalienable rights.

What we are witnessing is the rebirth of the American Dream in a new generation...

Hunter: Conservatives' responses to OWS are crazy...

Reactions [to the Occupy movement] from conservatives and the financial sector are picking up, perhaps because they realize this thing isn't just going away on its own. Significantly, much of the reaction falls into the "delusional, possibly insane" category, which perhaps speaks to a wee bit of panic in the upper echelons. Or maybe they've just lost the ability to come up with any responses to anything that aren't delusional and/or insane...

MinistryOfTruth: ...and childish

...Instead of having an honest conversation these shills would rather throw a hysterical hissy-fit. It's like arguing with a 4th grader...They only hate discrimination if you discriminate against the rich or corporations, every other kind of hatred is to be promoted...

Lenny Flank: OWS is non-violent, but subtly threatening

...One good example of an effective new tactic was the New York march to the homes of the wealthy CEO's. That action expanded our horizons beyond just occupying city parks, it brought new attention to the movement and allowed us to reach more people, it directly focused people's anger on some of those who deserve to have that anger focused on them. And its deepest accomplishment was entirely un-said but also noticed by everyone who it was directed at---"we know where you live". The one thing the super-rich fear more than anything is poor people with pitchforks, and you can bet that every rich fuck in the country got a chill up his spine when he heard about that action...
