Director Rob Reiner Sad That MSNBC's ‘Intelligent People’ Have to Watch ‘Racist’ ‘Liar’ Trump

January 31st, 2018 12:53 AM

MSNBC’s hyperbolic, frenzied State of the Union coverage climaxed in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Despite the fact that 75 percent of Americans approved of the speech, director Rob Reiner appeared on the network to lament that “intelligent people” like MSNBC's Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow were forced to listen to the “racist” “liar” Trump.

The When Harry Met Sally filmmaker whined: “I feel bad for you, intelligent people like you and Rachel and Brian Williams and Nicolle Wallace and Lawrence O’Donnell and Gene Robinson, you all have to sit there and talk about this guy as if he's a president.”

Apparently, it’s a crime to force liberals to listen to things they find distasteful. Reiner eventually conceded: “I mean, I know he was elected somehow.” But then it was right back to typical MSNBC sliming: “The guy is a racist. He's a misogynist and he’s an pathological liar.”

Earlier in the night, Matthews worried that Trump “stoked the fires” with North Korea. Maddow insisted he “wants a war” with the country. The juvenile journalists also giggled over Trump’s limo being flipped off.

Disgraced, ex-Nightly News anchor Brian Williams laughably suggested he would “fact check” the President. The night’s coverage began with MSNBC talking points that Trump is just like Nixon in the year he was forced to resign.

CHRIS MATHEWS: I'm joined by filmmaker rob Reiner. Rob, thanks so much for joining us tonight. You know everything. You know politics. You know theater. You know drama. What was tonight about? Was it a masquerade? How would you describe Trump's performance?

ROB REINER: Just as a performance standpoint it was —  well, we discovered he could read. He knows how to read. But it was one of the flattest State of the Union performances I've ever seen. If you look at what Joe Kennedy did afterwards, it was a wonderful performance. Besides the fact that the message was good. It was all about bringing the country together. Trump was —  I feel bad for you, intelligent people like you and Rachel and Brian Williams and Nicolle Wallace and Lawrence O’Donnell and Gene Robinson, you all have to sit there and talk about this guy as if he's a president. I mean, I know he was elected somehow.

...

REINER: The guy is a racist. He's a misogynist and he’s an pathological liar. Here’s what’s interesting about this State of the Union tonight. A pathological liar is somebody who can’t help but lie. He just lies all the time. We know that to be true about Trump. But when you write the speech down and you lie with words that you have prepared, that takes lying to a new level. I mean, he lied about the biggest tax cut in history. He lied about the Visa program. They're just lies. It's one thing to lie off the cuff, but when you write down a lie and you say it, how are we supposed to judge what we just saw there? It was ridiculous.
