Don't panic, liberals. Stephen Colbert won't really be supporting Donald Trump on Face The Nation this Sunday. He will only be pretending to support Trump in his character of pretend conservative from The Colbert Report. Since his current Late Show ratings on CBS are falling, one can't blame him for attempting to reprise a role that enjoyed some success. Of course, many liberals out there won't be in on the obvious joke when reading this Politico report which leaves off the fact that Colbert will only be pretending although anybody who is familiar with him would know there is no way he would ever support Trump:
Stephen Colbert finds Donald Trump's populism "very appealing," the “Late Show” host and comedian says in a new interview.
“There’s a populism to Trump that I found very appealing,” Colbert told CBS’ John Dickerson in an interview set to air Sunday on “Face the Nation.” “The party elders would like him to go away, but the people have decided that he is not going to.”
“I may disagree with anything that he's saying and think that his proposals are a little... well, more than a little shocking. But there is something really hopeful about the fact that, well, 36 percent of the likely voters want him so the people in the machine don't get to say otherwise,” Colbert continued, referencing a figure from a recent CBS/New York Times poll. “That's the one saving grace, I think, of his candidacy.”
“There sounded like there's a little bit of Trump respect in you for his ability to channel the populist,” Dickerson responded. “What I do respect is that he knows it is an emotional appeal," Colbert said. “And it might be emotional appeals that I can't respect. But he knows that you have to appeal to the voter. And that's why, I may be wrong — I made a big deal about there's no way he's gonna win."
...Colbert, in an October show, blasted Trump as an “egomaniacal billionaire” before declaring “you’re not gonna be president, all right?” But Colbert wasn’t the only one to suggest that, Dickerson pointed out.
“Yeah, again, I don't know anything about politics,” Colbert conceded.
Yes, reading that one can imagine the panic attack reactions from liberals. However, Salon assures their readers that it's all just an act. Get it? Just an act like pretending to be a conservative on his old show:
Politico’s Nolan McCaskill reports that on “Face the Nation” this Sunday, Stephen Colbert will reprise the role of “Stephen Colbert” and sort of kind of endorse Donald Trump for president.
Yet even with that assurance of fakery on the part of Colbert, several of Salon's readers still can't figure out it is just a joke:
Colbert has lost his marbles to like ANYTHING about Trump
I just lost a lot of respect for Colbert.
It will be a lot of fun to watch what happens after Colbert performs his fake conservative act on Face The Nation when liberals equally as clueless as the above Salon readers soil their diapers in reaction.
UPDATE: Among the completely clueless is CNN reporter Tal Kopan who was fooled by the obvious "Stephen Colbert" shtick of pretending to support Trump.
