Jared Lee Loughner, the man that shot former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz) in a Tucson shooting rampage in January 2011, was given seven life sentences without the ability of parole Thursday.
Victims and their relatives including Giffords' husband Mark Kelly addressed Loughner in the courtroom before the sentence was read.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Kelly told Loughner as he and Giffords stood before her assailant, "Gabby would trade her own life for one you took on that day. Every day is a continuous struggle to do the things she was once so very good at.”
“Mr. Loughner, you may have put a bullet through her head but you haven't put a dent in her spirit and her commitment to make the world a better place,” Kelly continued. "You tried to create for all of us a world as dark and evil as your own. But know this, and remember it always: You failed."
Kelly concluded, "You have decades upon decades to contemplate what you did. But after today, after this moment, here and now, Gabby and I are done thinking about you.”
Another victim who spoke at the sentencing was Susan Hileman..
"We've been told about your demons, about the illness that skewed your thinking," she said according to the Associated Press. "Your parents, your schools, your community, they all failed you. It's all true. It's not enough."
"You pointed a weapon and shot me three times." As she stared at Loughner, he apparently looked at her as she added, "And now I will walk out of this courtroom and into the rest of my life and I won't think of you again."
According to AP, Loughner's parents were sitting in the courtroom, his mother sobbing much of the time.
