The View: Elon Musk Only Protecting Free Speech of 'Straight White Men'

During their second episode following their spring break, the cackling coven of ABC’s The View decided to spout off about billionaire Elon Musk acquiring Twitter and his promise to promote free speech. But according to infinite wisdom co-host Sunny Hostin, Musk was only interested in protecting the free speech rights of “straight white men” and that he was going to “unleash the trolls” to abuse women on the platform.

“So, the richest person in the world, Elon Musk is also a notorious Twitter troll, but he won't have to worry about being banned anymore since he just made a deal to buy the company for $44 billion,” chided co-host Joy Behar as she introduced the discussion topic.

After playing a soundbite of Musk talking about Twitter as the “de facto town square,” Behar scoffed as she couldn’t figure out why conservatives would be excited about free speech and suggested the left liked it too:

Well, for some reason a lot of people on the right are celebrating this as a big win for free speech. But the left loves free speech too, don't we? So, why are conservatives so excited over Musk taking over?

Hostin was up first and she lashed out at the platform that allows people to post clips of her nonsenses and call her out. “I think Twitter can be a really horrible place, and I think people are excited because he is sort of going to unleash the trolls,” she sneered. “I think he's saying you get to say whatever you want. I'm going to take away the guardrails. And for me, that is something that is a bit scary.”

She then went on a rant about how Musk was going to increase the abuse of women once he really takes control:

And I think it's going to be scary to a lot of women because there have been some surveys done and 38 percent of women around the world have said they have been on the receiving end of a lot of abuse on Twitter. 85 percent of women have said they have seen the abuse.

And what's interesting to me about Twitter is only 22 percent of adults are on Twitter in the world. And that's from a 2019 Pew study.

She lashed out further by saying “Twitter is not the real world” because Twitter "is predominantly straight white men.” And it’s with that race-baiting approach that Hostin claimed Musk was only out to protect the “free speech of straight white men."

“And so let them have it. Let them just go at it. I enjoy the block button on Twitter,” she proclaimed.

Hostin went on to predict that Twitter will fail under Musk’s leadership and that “there will be other social media platforms that take over where real people are talking and there will be real freedom of speech.”

And as she was wrapping up her remarks, Hostin whined about “billionaires taking over our modes of communication” such as “Jeff Bezos taking over The Washington Post.” But her other example was “Mark Zuckerberg taking over Facebook.”

Um, Sunny. Zuckerberg was a co-founder of Facebook and it’s why he’s a billionaire.

JOY BEHAR: So, the richest person in the world, Elon Musk is also a notorious Twitter troll, but he won't have to worry about being banned anymore since he just made a deal to buy the company for $44 billion.

(…)

BEHAR: Well, for some reason a lot of people on the right are celebrating this as a big win for free speech. But the left loves free speech too, don't we? So, why are conservatives so excited over Musk taking over? Sunny?

SUNNY HOSTIN:  Oh, me?

[Laughter]

BEHAR: Yeah. We'll start with you.

HOSTIN: I think Twitter can be a really horrible place, and I think people are excited because he is sort of going to unleash the trolls. Right? I think he's saying you get to say whatever you want. I'm going to take away the guardrails. And for me, that is something that is a bit scary.

And so Twitter is not the real world. And in fact, on Twitter it is predominantly straight white men. So, when Elon Musk says, ‘wow, this is about free speech,’ it seems to me that it's about free speech of straight white men. And so let them have it. Let them just go at it. I enjoy the block button on Twitter.

I think it has a real outsized influence in our world because politicians and celebrities are on it. And I think what may happen quite frankly with Elon Musk taking it over is that there will be other social media platforms that take over where real people are talking and there will be real freedom of speech.

Because I'm tired of billionaires taking over our modes of communication. You’ve got Jeff Bezos taking over The Washington Post, you’ve got Mark Zuckerberg taking over Facebook and Instagram. Now you've got Elon Musk taking over Twitter. You know, I guess billionaires want to take over free speech and I'm not here for it.
