This was rank political exploitation of Biden family tragedies as a shield against legitimate inquiry.
On today's Morning Joe, after mentioning the death of Joe Biden's first wife and daughter in a car accident, and the death of son Beau due to brain cancer, a mawkish Mika Brzezinski described Hunter as the "surviving son" and denounced criticism of him by the Trump campaign.
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Politically, this is losing ugly for the Trump campaign. Everybody who knows Joe Biden and supports Joe Biden will dig in deeper. They will be deeply, deeply, deeply concerned and upset about what Trump is doing to the Biden family. You have Joe Biden, who lost his daughter and wife in a car accident. And then lost Beau Biden to brain cancer. This is Joe Biden’s surviving son. This politically is losing very ugly for the Trump campaign. That’s just the bottom line.
Got that? Joe Biden lost family members in tragic circumstances. Any inquiry into possible wrongdoing by Joe and Hunter is therefore out of bounds.
Mika characterized calls for inquiry as "what Trump is doing to the Biden family," thus seeking to drag the family's sad but unrelated history into the matter. Brzezinski lambasted the Trump campaign for "losing ugly." But it is not a winning strategy for Mika and other Biden fans to attempt to reduce their candidate to an object of pity.
On an unrelated note, check out Scarborough's shirt. Is an Italian restaurant somewhere short a tablecloth? Or, in the spirit of campaign season, was Joe dressing like a politician about to down a deep-fried corndog at the Iowa State Fair?
