MSNBC's Saturday mornings might be dominated by professor Melissa Harris-Perry and her exceedingly esoteric left-wing academic nuttiness, but weekday anchor Craig Melvin today offered viewers a breath of fresh air when it comes to the issue of political correctness run amok at America's colleges and universities.
Melvin hosted Greg Lukianoff, president of Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) official, to describe on-campus lunacy like the "policing of what are called microaggressions," the insistence on "trigger warnings" outside events which may have controversial content, and, my personal favorite: how one college shut down a pet-a-camel event for "Hump Day."
"College campuses are supposed to be if not perhaps the last great bastion" of freedom of speech and free inquiry, Melvin lamented.
Picking up on that, Lukianoff argued that campus political correctness creates an environment which prevents people from "talk[ing] to each other who they disagree with" and "start thinking of themselves and each other as incredibly fragile, and the problem is that can be a self-fulfilling prophecy."
