Typically when the “bleep” sound is heard on television, it means that someone used an expletive or took something to the extreme. But not for Broad City, the Comedy Central show co-created by Ilana Glazer. On that show, when you hear the bleep, it means someone said the word “Trump.”
The horror.
Following in the footsteps of Hollywood’s attempt to take down the president at every opportunity, the fourth season of Broad City will bleep out every use of Trump’s name on their show. As llana Glazer told USA Today in an interview, “There’s no airtime for this orange (person).”
Originally, Glazer and her co-creator Abbi Jacobson wrote the fourth season thinking the 2016 election would turn out differently. And in fact, on previous episodes, the series has indulged Clinton with an incredible amount of hero-worship. Specifically, one episode involved Glazer’s character volunteering to campaign for Clinton.
But after “this game show host became president of our country,” Glazer decided to take a different route. She told USA Today that she was forced to rewrite most of the fourth season following Trump’s election.
The USA Today article also described an episode in the fourth season, which premiered at the Colossal Clusterfest in San Francisco. In the episode, the main character was losing “touch with her womanhood” as a witch, according to Glazer, because of the “danger” that people face during the current administration.
One has to wonder what sort of danger Glazer is seeing. Apparently, in her eyes, it’s dangerous enough to call for a complete obliteration of the POTUS’ name so that people aren’t offended.
