WaPo Slams Obama/Joker Posters as ‘Coded,’ ‘Racially Charged’ Stereotypes

An article in Thursday’s Washington Post lashed out at the viral Obama-as-the-Joker posters, attacking them as promoting "coded," "racially charged" images. Art critic Philip Kennicott smeared the images, which have been showing up in Los Angeles, as flat-out bigoted: "The charge of socialism is secondary to the basic message that Obama can't be trusted, not because he is a politician, but because he's black." [Emphasis added]

In the August Style 6 piece, Kennicott provided this incendiary take on the poster campaign: "Obama, like the Joker and like the racial stereotype of the black man, carries within him an unknowable, volatile and dangerous marker of urban violence, which could erupt at any time." The Post writer did acknowledge that a similar image deriding Bush as the villainous character appeared in the Vanity Fair in 2008. But he spun this Joker poster as somehow worse:

And didn't we see George W. Bush depicted as the Joker not so long ago? Yes, in an image by Drew Friedman published online by Vanity Fair on July 29, 2008. That drawing at least played into a view of Bush popular among his detractors, that the former president was unpredictable and fast on the draw when it came to geopolitics. But the danger many of Obama's detractors detect is more of calculating, long-standing deception, that he is quietly and secretly marshaling a socialist agenda, a view that would be better served by imagery that recalled "The Manchurian Candidate."

The Post writer went on to explain why the new image is not a "good poster." He justified, "The Obama Joker poster leaves you with the sense that it has said everything it has to say, and waits only for the media to endorse the message through the legitimizing process peculiar to our new age of rapid-response journalism."

Continuing the argument that the Obama/Joker posters, which feature the word "socialism" underneath, are racist, Kennicott found nefarious meaning in the very use of the iconic Batman character:

So why the anonymity? Perhaps because the poster is ultimately a racially charged image. By using the "urban" makeup of the Heath Ledger Joker, instead of the urbane makeup of the Jack Nicholson character, the poster connects Obama to something many of his detractors fear but can't openly discuss. He is black and he is identified with the inner city, a source of political instability in the 1960s and '70s, and a lingering bogeyman in political consciousness despite falling crime rates.

The MRC’s Matt Balan reported on Tuesday that when CNN’s Jeanne Moos examined the viral campaign, she focused mostly heavily on left-wing anger towards it.

These people have made projection an art form.

Kennicot is the one who  made the connection between black, inner city  and crime.

Kennicott is making the claim that Obama, because of his color, is prone to violence.

My first thought

My first thought when seeing the poster for the first time was that it portrayed Obama as being dishonest about his socialist agenda.  Race never even entered my mind.  I guess I am not sophisticated enough.

Thank you.

Beauxdog

I knew it would only be a mattter of time

before someone in the media cried racist wolf over this.  These people are so predictable.  They've been working on establishing this theme throughout Obama's campaign and presidency:  If you criticize the One in any way, no matter how legitimate the criticism, you are a racist, end of story.

Let them cry racist, I am

Let them cry racist, I am betting on this will become like the boy who cried "wolf" one too many times. I am not cowed by the “racist” accusation because it’s not true. Are liberals becoming paranoid about racism, stuck in the past or projecting there true feelings? Are they seeing a racist around every corner? Is it the Senator McCarthy syndrome, seeing a racist around every corner and in any white person who criticizes a black person? Or do they think if they level the racist charge we’ll fold and let them do what they want? Is this the real reason they nominated Obama, so they could play the race card to get there way, or just a happy coincident they are taking advantage of?

The "everything is racism"

The "everything is racism" charge is wearing very thin, and I don't think it will be long before it starts backfiring on those who use it.

I always thought the Joker was gay!

So shouldn't the Post attack the homophobia rather than seeing racism where it isn't?  The Left needs to get its grievances straight!  Ha ha.

The Joker gay? News to me.

The Joker gay? News to me. His girl friend Harley Quinn won't be happy to hear this. :-)

Betraying my age...

....I was thinking about the "old" joker, Caeser Romero.  He played the joker pretty gay in the TV series.

Gotcha. I grew up on the

Gotcha. I grew up on the old show myself during the '70s, though  I wasn't conscious of gay/straight issues in 1970. :-)

Obama's bigoted slurs

Obama has shared contempt with rural people, bible lovers and people that carry guns.

Obama is half white and is NOT half Negroe.  Where is the error in showing the skin color of Stanley Obama?

Don't forget Special

Don't forget Special Olympians, and "typical" white people.

It's odd that this guy

It's odd that this guy writes so much about Heath ledger's joker character but never gets the spirit of the character correct. The main behavior of the character is betrayal. The joker stages a bank robbery and then kills off all his accomplices, mainly by shooting them in the back. He then goes onto betray all the mobsters who supported him. He then talks Harvey Dent into betraying his beliefs, which ends up being his undoing.

Maybe the intent of the poster is not racial, but meant to show folks that anyone who buys into Obama's lies is apt to be betrayed by him.

→ Missed a spot

The important connection between Obama and the Joker is the scene where the Joker sets fire to a mountain of cash.

Remind you of anyone?

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

I think ultimately the Joker character

stands for pure subversiveness.  He's a sociopath of the worst kind, committing acts of violence and brutality without any apparent motive or reason.  Like Obama, he is a man with a murky, mysterious past.  Like the Joker, the vast majority of people know very little about Obama himself, and uses his teleprompters and handlers to don the mask of the altruistic communicator, with only a few unscripted moments like Joe the Plumber and the Gates affair offering clues to the man's true identity.  The Joker's actions are meant solely to undermine the existing social order, which makes him diametrically opposed to Batman, who seeks to preserve it.  I think the deeper message here is how Obama seeks to undermine traditional American culture with a radically socialist agenda.   What the Joker seeks to do wtih guns and bombs, Obama seeks to do with cap and trade and universal health care.

A PICTURE IS WORTH A 1,000 WORDS...

The reaction to this Obama-"Joker" poster means it needs to be made as common as the Che image. Put it on everything, T-shirts, stickers, posters, billboards, EVERYTHING. Make it fasionable to make fun of the guy. Socialists should mocked & made fun of, they suck. They should be made uncomfortable in believing that they should take from those who earned it.

Get Over It!

Hey Obama! Get over it! Remember your famous quote to your opposition? "We won, you lost!" With this victory, comes critisizm and satire. Grow a pair and be a man. The man your Communist Party demonized for eight years, George Bush, took it like a man and never once encouraged his supporters to report their friends to the White House. You sir, are an empty suit in every aspect of life except for your family! You in no way measure up to George Bush. There is a price to pay for fame and notoriety. Its time you pay up. sir, and quit the crying! Our critisizm of you has nothing to do with your race. Its time you denounce DasKapital and distance yourself from Karl Marx! If you want to arrest me for my speech, so be it! I'd rather be imprisoned for speaking the truth than bow to the will of a tyrant! This character is merely equating you to what you really are! The truth hurts, doesn't it?

    They are going nuts

They are going nuts over this because the artist is as yet unknown.  I hope whoever it is will be able to withstand whatever this Whitehouse and the mad dog left will try to do to him/her when their identity is finally discovered.  In the world of obama and the democrats free speech actually means 'correct' speech.

Yes, it's a code, a secret code! WHA-HA-HA-HA! Seriously, D.C. is out of touch with reality. Could it be just somebody making a joke? Hey obama! You have been punked! What's the problem, obama? no sense of humor? Have fun with it. Use it for Halloween. Some times a poster is just a poster. Personally I think he looks good as the Joker. Better than Bush did. I don't see what race has to do with it. It's not because he's black or white, it's because he's an idiot.....At least where politics are concerned.                    Angry Mob!

Pledge

I pledge allegiance to the flag of The United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands; one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.

AND I further pledge that as a free citizen of this America, that many died for, I will never allow anyone to make me cower or shut down my speech due to phony charges of racism; as they have attempted for over 100 years. Any charges of racism will serve to increase the veracity of my attacks upon what I see as subversive methods of shutting down our freedoms.

Its not like Rush didn't warn us all about this over a year ago. I have watched it since my childhood. DON'T TREAD ON ME!

My head is going to explode......

....from all this racism crap! Oh yea by the way,

"Kennicott" - a another new code word for race baiter

Obama is identified with the "inner city"? Is that Honolulu or Harvard?

And what does this idiot mean "Nicholson's makeup was urbane, Ledger's was urban"? There have been some truly asinine takes written on this lately, but this one wins the prize for sheer fecklessness, IMO.

Typical liberal hypocrisy

So the Obama-Joker is racist, but the Bush-Joker is OK?

http://www.vanityfair.com/online/politics/2008/07/bush-as-joker.html

Typical liberal hypocrisy . . .

It's the Bias!

The shame of this story is that the liberal media doesn't want to know who the artist is because the artist doesn't fit the narrative of an angry racist right-winger huddled in his redoubt with his guns and bible. In all likelihood the artist is a muslim engineering student living in Chicago named Firas Khateeb. An amateur photographer and photoshopper, he created the image because he was disappointed that the Bamster is not more radical than he hoped. He's hiding in plain sight.

And the MSM wonders why they

And the MSM wonders why they are dying...you can't sell this kind of crap. This is one of the most tortured, biased piece I have seen in a long, long time. RIP MSM!

Want to make this poster scarier?

Add a surgeon's cap and a stethoscope.

I like it, Red Jeep

Perhaps our fellow NBer, Edward Cropper, will read your suggestion and offer it up....his stuff is excellent.

I hope he fails, too.

The caption could be...

In this scene, Bond visits the Sebelius GovernMed Center to get a shot to cure the burning when he tinkles and winds up experiencing one of the cost-cutting treatments ObamaCare offers.

If you squint, you can make out Rahm and Zeke Emmanuel in the background arguing about "efficiencies" and disposals - "Hey, remember that movie Soylent Green...".

"So why the anonymity?

"So why the anonymity? Perhaps because the poster is ultimately a racially charged image."

Or perhaps it could be because the artist believes the moonies on the left would try and have him charged with hate speech?

If I was that guy that's what I'd sure as hell be scared of.

Why choose the lesser of two evils?

Now wouldn't it be funny if

Now wouldn't it be funny if the artist who made this poster turned out to be black?

The whiplash that the State Run Media would receive trying to reverse course would be lovely to watch.

The Obama Administration: THE most fiscally irresponsible Administration EVER

Why are the liberals still

Why are the liberals still caught up in pre-civil rights era identity politics rhetoric? I don't freakin' care if obama's black. I care that he's destroying the country.

does that make me a racist, a right wing extremist who's a danger to my government?

NO.

What I take out of this is

What I take out of this is that Mr. Kennicott seems to be writing a satire on liberal chic pseudo intellectual art critics. It's all pretentious gobbledygook that boils down to the most unimaginative interpretation of the meaning of the poster as possible. If Kennicott was an artist, instead of an "art critic", his column would have been a paint-by-numbers picture.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

Perceptions

Left says "It's racist"!

Right says "It must be correct, it hit a nerve, and they have no other straws to grasp at to refute it"

Truth and Trust

The last paragraph in the WaPo article is:

“Obama, like the Joker and like the racial stereotype of the black man, carries within him an unknowable, volatile and dangerous marker of urban violence, which could erupt at any time. The charge of socialism is secondary to the basic message that Obama can't be trusted, not because he is a politician, but because he's black."

No, WaPo, Obama cannot be trusted because he is a post-modern fascist who simply does not know what truth is.  So far as he is concerned he says whatever he want so as to manipulate people to do whatever he wants.  That is what truth is for him.

Of course, WaPo has been employing their own version of the same kind of post-modern “truth” for years, so naturally WaPo cannot see where the problem is, or what it is.
Come to think of it, WaPo cannot be trusted either (see tag line).

- Relying upon the State Run Media for your information is like relying upon an embezzler to manage your portfolio.

I don't know if they could

I don't know if they could be making more out of this poster than they are.  Take it at what it is - it says Socialist underneath it - clearly that is what it is hinting at.  When you can't come up with something legitimate, keep searching until you come up with something ridiculous!

Right

Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know - anything critical of the Great and Powerful O is racist.
